Alright, a little background info before I start. I purchased this DSM with an aftermarket Kenwood headunit installed, as well as various other poorly rigged up electronics (gauges and a turbo timer). I have removed the headunit in an attempt to both clean up the wiring and fix an issue it has with the AM/FM tuner.

I have the stock Infinity amp under my seat and from my understanding that is used to power the tweeters in the dash, so I would like to retain that. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Below are a couple pics of what I am working with, the top one is the butchered factory harness WTF, and the second is the harness for the Kenwood harness and what appears to be a MITAH adapter?

My questions are:

1. do I have everything I need to use my Kenwood headunit and retain use of the Infinity amp?

2. is it possible to purchase a radio harness to replace my butchered unit?

Thanks so much for all of the help!

I would buy a new harness from radio shack/best buy, and get rid of that tangled mess of wiring..It's a hack job to say the least..The wiring harness's come with instructions on what wire from the new harness go to what wire from the stock wires..

Also the amp question..I don't think the amp powers the tweeters at all..I think it just powers the door speakers and the 6X9's in the back..When I wired in a new headunit in my girls avenger the amp still powers the speakers..

I will definitely be paying Best Buy a visit in the near future, that harness has been cut into so many times I cant believe it. :barf:

As for the amp, thank you for clarifying that for me I wasnt sure. However I would like to retain its use mainly because I want the simplest route possible to just have a radio once in a while, the turbo spooling is enough for me..but the gf on the other hand..not so much :p

Does anybody know if this MITAH harness is all I need to retain use of my factory amp?

Like I said get the harness and it will retain the factory amp..The right harness should be just wire it up and be on your way..

I don't have a radio in my car anymore cause I like to hear the turbo spool..My girl doesn't ever ride in my car, so not having music isn't a big deal for me..

The amp drives the tweeters, the front doors and the rear 6x9's. You cannot retain functionality of the tweeters when combining an aftermarket head unit with the stock amp. There's an internal crossover that will not function without the infinity headunit installed. Some of us have been fortunate enough to locate the "black plug" which does enable the tweets. No idea if they still need bass blockers.

You're going to be facing 2 things. Fixing your existing harness and getting the harness plug/adapter to allow you to retain use of the factory amp. There is a very knowledgeable member on here with regards to the infinity system. I will track down his username - it's up to you to contact him and get your ducks all in a row. I would appreciate that very much, thanks!

If the tweeters dont work when all is said and done, its not a huge deal.

PieEyedPiper is correct. The tweeters will not be powered with an aftermarket head unit, and with a good set of speakers in the doors and rear, you likely will not even notice they are not working.

Well in that case, thats just fine. The previous owner (one of the 11 before me) installed what look to be decent rear 6x9's and mids, so if I can figure out what i need to do to utilize my factory amp with this headunit I will be a happy man to get back to performance :thumb:

You almost will not need to use the factory amp with an aftermarked headunit. An aftermarket one will put out more power that the factory one and will sound good without the factory amp. I don't utilize mine anymore and it sounds great. It gets far more than loud enough for me. Honestly though, if you really, really wanted to run an amp, it would be much easier (IMO) to get a smaller aftermarket 4 channel amp and wire that up under your rear seat, then user 2 of the speaker leads from the head unit to run the tweets, and the amp to run the door and rear speakers. That way you utilize all of your speakers like you want.

I have been considering that option for a while, and the only reason I was so adamant about keeping the factory amp is because I had thought that if I didnt and just wanted to use the headunit to drive my speakers I would have to run all new speaker wires and everything, im not huge into electrical work so cut me some slack ;)
The back of my headunit only has a female end to plug a wiring harness into and 4 preamp outputs if that helps at all.

Alright, so in the interest of convenience, would the best route to be to grab a MITAH harness, a new factory radio harness, and use the factory amp? Even if my dash tweeters dont retain their functionality.
Wiring frustrates me :(

Cheapest and easiest thing to do would be to ditch the factory amp and run the aftermarket headunit with a good set of speakers and call it a day.

Bud: Because you're just that cool.

I could be just that cool Corey..But would still like to know how I got the tweeters to work with an aftermarket head unit?

Op I would still make a run to best buy and get a new wiring harness..That jumbled mess you got there screams problems..And looks horrid..

Oh yes, a trip to Best Buy is the first thing on the list LOL, 11 previous owners have had their way with that one enough, time to put it out of its misery. :toobad:
To run speakers directly to the headunit (bypassing the factory amp), would just require running new speaker wires with RCA jacks to the headunit and bam done, correct? I'm such a wiring noob..but everybody starts somewhere right?

Bud, read through the huge infinity thread. I'm sure the answer is in there.

Are you talking about your 1g?

No not the 1g..My girls avenger..The amp is under the trunk lid, is the only difference between eclipse and avenger/sebring..Well the cars with the factory infinity system anyway..The dsm's were hatches and the avenger/sebrings had trunks, that's why is under the trunklid..

I'll check out that thread and see if I can't find my answer..

Ya basically..The instructions tell you which wires would normally go through the harness and connect to the speakers..But If you want to bypass the amp, and run all new wires that can also be done..The trick is to get the wires under the carpet and ran to the speakers..Then I would unplug the amp, just to be safe..I use shrink wrap on all wiring just to make sure they don't short out..You can buy a shrink wrap kit at wallmart for like 12 bux I think..Then just wire everything up with the shrink wrap on the wiring connect wires, and heat with a lighter to get your seal..

ohhhh I think I'm starting to understand. I can just use the harness plugged into the headunit to power the speakers instead of the amp. Only one problem though, the headunit uses a harness that plugs into the factory one for power and such, leaving RCA outputs for the speakers :(

EDIT: whoops, took another look. It all makes perfect sense now!
