So I have a 95gsx with the stock HU and infinity sound system. What do i need to take into consideration when upgrading my HU and/or component speakers? Can i use stock wiring? if i get a new headunit is there an adapter to utilize the existing wires to the speakers? I remember it was a PITA to run new wires to the doors for my last eclipse's aftermarket comps and amp/HU combo.

You can run nthe stock wiring to the speakers. The factory amp is junk but works nice with an after market HU and some aftermarket rear speakers.

It's pretty basic, So Dont overthink it and just put your new stuff in.:thumb:

Doesnt the plug that goes into the back of the stock HU have a weird end? I remember it being awkward and not compatible with most aftermarket HU's

I remember the cable coming from the stock Amp being a big round plug, not compatible with a aftermarket HU as-is. am i wrong?

when upgrading the head unit to aftermarket in virtually any car you will need to buy an after market wiring harness (usually sold at walmart or anywhere you get stereo stuff) specific to your car, the other end of this wiring harness is bare wires that are labeled, now with your new aftermarket cd player harness those wires are also labeled so you will need to sauder or butt connect these corresponding wires together then just plug each end of harness in (one to the cd player, and one to the car harness) also dont forget to plug in your antenna as some cars require this as a ground, and last but not least get a dash filler kit it surrounds your new cd player and makes it look like it actually belongs in your car!

What you would buy is an adapter harness. The harness has loose wires on one side that your splice into your new head unit's wire harness, and the other side has a plug that plugs right into the stock stereo harness. That way you can wire up your head unit harness outside the car in the comfort of your own home, then just plug it in when you're doing the install. Very easy to do. The stock wiring has wires for most everything you'll need with the exception of a speed sensor line for GPS, or reverse light line for a rear-facing camera.

edit - seems i was beaten to it! :)

Yes i get that i will need the wiring harness, as every car basically does. But i believe the stock HU has the power wires, atnennae etc, but the actually SPEAKER wires are through the PLUG that comes from the amp. This is what i am asking about as there is usually not a place for this on an aftermarket HU. Has anyone here actually installed a new HU while still utilizing the stock amp?

I would imagine that the harness would have a spot for that plug to go into. So the power/ground/antenna plug AND the amp plug would fit into the Metra harness and then you'd wire that up with the colors on the harness that plugs into the back of the aftermarket HU.

I'm not positive this is how it works because I've still got the stock radio too but I have a bit of car audio experience and that seems like something I've seen.

To answer your question - YES, you can use the same wires that are connected to your stock speakers. It will save you the hassle for fishing wires throughout the vehicle in regards to the speakers. I'm actually running infinity kappas to the front and rear. My buddy and I just cut the wires being ran to the stock speakers and just crimped them to the kappas. The other end of the wires are in back of the head unit so you will just cut and crimp those to your new wiring harness. :thumb:

Wondering about this also...just installed a new HU and the volume is ridiculously low wondering if the factory amp has something to do with it...ive had the same issues with caddys and fords with factory amps....just threw in a after market for my rear speakers until i figure it out

Does anyone know the amp rating? Is it worth later upgrading the amp for comp speakers?

Normally now a days the HU's have a built in amp. Play around with the settings and see if there is one in your HU. You also want to adjust the LPF and HPF and you should see a change to your sound. :thumb:

Hell's to the Yeah! :hellyeah: You are talking about running the HU rms which is usually 50x4 or something. If you run an aftermarket amp you are X's the amount of rms to each speaker. At that point you will have to run wires throughout the car as the amp will require a power cable running to the battery and the speakers will have to run to the amp and so fourth. At that point you might as well just save up for a full system (subwoofer, extra amp, capacitor etc) and put it all in together for one bad a$$ sounding system. :thumb:
