So I just bought my 4th DSM sunday and was stoked. Car ran good, a couple small problems that need to be fixed but nothing major. Was leaving my gf's parent's house today and my car started stumbling and choking out. I had to really put the pedal down to get the smallest boost and acceleration then it died. Popped the hood(dark out of corse) everything seemed connected and ok. Tried to start it and nothing. Had to get it towed. Only thing I noticed was a tear in the lower intercooler pipe but could not tell if it was straight through. Popped off the intake and checked for shaft play and there was none. I guess the car sat for almost a year before I bought it so maybe bad gas? It was just filled up with chevron 91 octane. Any help is greatly appreciated. This is my daily driver and I need it running fast. Gonna get an early start working on it tomorrow and need advice on what to look for.

That's definitely a big boost leak, check out those intercooler pipes and figure out which one popped off, or if there was a hole in one, you already found your problem!

Agreed, happened to me once before when I was just driving down the road. Now for some reason I get shivers everytime I'm driving on that roadROFLROFL

Yeah if there's a tear in your intercooler pipe...that would be the first place to start. Have you ever blown off an intercooler pipe? Same sort of story there, except it sounded like someone launched a really big potato gun from my engine bay :)

Thanks guys it is reassuring to hear that. I am on my way to check the car out soon. I will keep you guys posted.

yeah I have in my old GST on the freeway LOL, had to hand tighten a hose clamp on because I had no tools. Then had to baby it back up to speed without boost. No fun LOL.

No holes or tears in the boost hoses, checked the spark plugs and they are horrible. Cleaned them a bit and it ran for about 3-5 seconds. Gonna go buy some NGK's right now. Also the starter is weird, it only cranks the engine over every now and then. Most of the time it just makes a spinning noise, and ideas what this is? thanks.

Got the NGK BKR6E-11 plugs, guy told me to gap them at .50! just searched and realized to gap them at .28. Car started for about 3 seconds, revved it then it died. So now I am gonna regap and try again. Anyone know about my starter problem? Solenoid maybe?

I found a black wire with small connector coming off the wire harness from the injectors on the driver side that was not plugged in or grounded.
Then I found a ground on the intake manifold that seems to be cut. Any ideas on that? I am looking at everything on the car to get it running. It's my DD and I need her running asap. I will get pics up tonight.

The starter problem is the starter solenoid not engaging the the starter gear. Sometimes having someone tap it while you turn the ignition will get it to engage. Sounds like you need a new starter.

I am not sure whats going on with the small connector that isnt connected. Pics would help.

If you changed the plugs and it made a difference it sounds to me like you have an electrical problem. Did you do a boost leak test to make sure that their arent any leaks?

I will try that with the starter. My friend told me it could be the cam angle sensor or crank position sensor. I don't have a boost leak tester right now, will make one soon however. Gonna see if I am getting spark by grounding a plug tomorrow morning. Anything else I should check for?

Found the problem. I used a OBD2 scanner and it pulled a code for camshaft position sensor. Now I need to research how to install a new one, and order the sensor. Wish me luck.

I am going to buy the sensor tomorrow for $92! Then hopefully get it installed and get her running again. I have been searching a ton and can't find an article on how to install a Cam Angle Sensor on the 95 4G63T engine. Anyone have a link? Or tell me how to replace the sensor? thanks.

The cam angle sensor bolts directly to the passenger side of the head (Between the throttle body and the thermostat housing where you pour the coolant in the radiator and engine). It has 1 nut and 1 harness plug. It is a very simple swap. Try to make note of the position of the sensor and put the new one on in the same place. That will get your timing close to where it was before. You probably want to have a timing light handy and reset your base timing at 5* BTDC. Congrats on finding the problem.

This is what I thought. But my car is a 95 and the CAS is mounted right under the intake camshaft. So I heard you have to pull the cam gear off, along with the timing belt and everything else required to remove the timing belt. Anybody have a write up on how to replace the CAS on a 95?

As far as I know thw Cam Angle Sensor is in the same spot on 1G's and 2G's. The crank angle sensor on the other hand is mounted down by the crank behind the timing cover. I am not sure why you would have to remove the cam gears. You need the service manual. They are relatively cheap on CD.

So my friend has been helping me work on the car and we got the cam gear off and saw that the ring inside that the CAS reads is bent and scored so it killed the sensor. So I had to order a new cam gear from the dealer or else it would kill the new sensor. Only on the 95-96 4G63T's did they have these gears and sensor location. Hope this thread might help someone one day.

What on earth are you working on? The cam sensor isnt on the cam gear. Its on the passenger side of the motor. Try to clarify what youre talking about. And just because you pull a code for something doesnt mean its always that part thats failed. It could be a number of things.

Yes it is. Read my last post please. On the 95-96 turbo engines the cam angle sensor is mounted right under the intake cam and the sensor sits inside a ring on the back side of the cam gear. 97-up do have the sensor on the passenger side. I replaced the sensor, cam gear, timing belt and balance shaft belt. The car runs like a champ now, loses traction in 1st gear just like it should.
