i've done searches and cant find anything quite like my problem anywhere so hopefully someone can help me. first off, i have a 93 TSI AWD with a 91 JDM motor. ok i think i have a couple problems here. but first off, the last couple weeks my car has been vibrating horribly. i feel it most when accelerating from 2500-4000 rpm's. well today when driving, i boosted to pass a car and it vibrated the worst its ever done and then all of a sudden it sounded like a big backfire and then the car died. while i was still rolling, i put it back in gear and it started back up, but i hit the gas pedal and it did absolutly nothing and then it died again. it hasnt started since. it was really dark at the time so i couldnt do too much to it but i looked for blown IC piping and they were all fine. the weird thing tho is that when i try to start it, it cranks but it doesnt sound like its under a load at all. it just kinda sounds like the starter is spinning but the motor isnt at all. i look at my AFC while cranking and it only reads around 130 rpm's. i havent been able to work on it in daylight so i cant see anything very well but if anyone has any idea's that could help, i would love to hear them, as i am without a vehicle right now and my car is stuck in someones driveway a couple miles away from my house!

If the cranking sounds like someone took the spark plugs out and you were cranking with 4 open holes, you probably have snapped a timing belt. This comes with a bunch of nice surprises.

Do a compression test, or better yet, remove the oil filler cap and have someone crank the engine over and observe to see if you can see any movement inside the valve cover. No movement = broken belt.

If you do observe this, you have 2 choices. 1 Replace belt and do a compression test to see if you are a 2 percenter in that only about 2 percent survive this without bent valves.

2 pull the head as your luck is the same as mine. However, I would do 1 first just on the micro chance you are luckier than me.

If you have bent valves, do your research as to what you need as we have covered this many times in the forums.

Let us know. I will help you if you need.

Good Luck

Almost sounds like You lost Your balance shaft belt and it took out Your timing . Best place to start is check all of Your timing marks and belts.

I thought the rpm signal was driven off the cam sensor. If this is the case, having an rpm indication while cranking would mean the cam sensor was picking up rotation which would mean the timing belt is ok. I would definitely take old mitsu's advice and check the condition of your timing belt first though. It's easy enough to check and rules out a lot.

but if i had snappedthe timing belt, i wouldnt have been able to put it back in gear and the car start right back up. if the belt was snapped, it would be completely screwed. it did turn back on when i dropped it in gear going around 40 mph, it just did absolutely nothing when i hit the gas while it was running again. so i'm comfused. i'll check to timing belt tomorrow but i really dont think thats the problem. there was also a tiny little bit of coolant that i noticed when i popped the hood. but i didnt see a hose popped off anywhere and i didnt see it leaking at all. are there any issues in the coolant system that could cause i car to not start ? i know there is a sensor in the thermostat housing that it wont start without but thats it.

well i gave the car a look yesterday and it appears that timing jumped a tooth. it looks like the exhaust cam is 2 tooth off. but i thought that it would still be enough to get it started if it was 1 tooth off, just not run very well. but i guess i'm wrong, cause i got it to backfire once when trying to start it, but thats as close as i've come
