I bought it in this condition, and searching makes me believe it's the shift forks or worn gear. Before I take it apart I just want to be sure what I need to replace. (so it's not in pieces for weeks while I'm waiting for parts to arrive)
Also where can I get those parts

heres a vid I shot
YouTube - 98 eclipse gsx 3rd gear pops out

i should have made it more clear in the video. it will go in fine with the clutch in, but as soon as the clutch starts grabbing it starts grinding.

Thanks

Honestly in my opinion i would say its the syncro that went out on it best bet is going to be rebuild the tranny... I havent seen to many worn gears do that because the grinding noise you hear is actually the synrco's dog teeth grinding on the coupler

try shifter bushings first. if not probably a throw out bearing. i would just order a new clutch and shifter bushings. bet it gets rid of your problem.

this is also true. i didn't have the sound on my computer. read your post then actually listened to the video.. LOL. synchro's sounds right.

Would a synchro cause this issue? I thought synchro's did as the name implies, synchronize the gear speeds to allow a smooth gear change. Why would it cause the car to pop out of gear?

That is correct. my bet is on the three/four shift fork slider for the syncro. i replaced one the other night on a 2g for 5th gear and the slider was half worn causing it to pop out of gear. but it could also be a fork.

It's not the syncro. I've had those go out and replaced them. different symptoms. not the throw out bearing either.
Where do I get the sliders, fork, etc? also will it interchange with the gst? How about interchange with the 1g?

all the other gears work perfect. I'm surprised it has tranny problems because this was driven by a female.

The gst and gsx trannies are completely different internals . but you can check here and btw you probably won't find better prices. http://www.jackstransmissions.com/pages/mits-parts

I've seen that they sell tranny gears. Thats good :) sadly when i was fixing the syncro on my NA 2g. None of the tranny shops in town could press the gearset apart. Ill take it apart in about a month and see how it goes. I have a couple other cars I have to finish first and finals start next week.

Can you confirm that the shifter is engaging the trans all the way into third and not just partially? You can check this by shifting the car into 3rd with the car off, then disconnecting the cable at the tranny and grabbing the lever and if you can push the lever further, note the position of the lever vs the cable eye and if theres a good bit of distance, theres the issue, especially if the bushing in the cable is sufficiently worn enough to allow excessive play in the eye. Probably is a tranny problem, but its always worth a try to check the simple stuff first and Ive seen the cable bushings cause issues like this before.

I think Dogbox Racing has a special on FWD trannys for only 725.00. Hell you can barely get a decent used trans for much less than that. Just an option to think about to avoid having to deal with replacing damaged forks when the hub and slider assemblies can be damaged as well and dealing with bad brass causing grinds and having to drop the tranny again. Hell, you oughta see the tranny Im doing for my car. EVO 1-5 gearset, Quaife diffs, Im going to have 4 grand in it easily an Im having to save up for it til June haha. Anyway, just trying to help and I wish you the best of luck getting it fixed up.

Sadly I'm AWD so I can't use that. I wont be racing or doing anything to it, so stock parts will do

Hey, Hak, any prices on some of the parts in that thread? Best Ive ever seem for a kit with just brass, rubber and bearings is around 400.00 ish. (synchro brake rings, axle and shaft seals and all bearings within the tranny is what I mean) and Im curious what all the other internals may cost...

Sorry, ED1380, I actually meant that post for the other guy. The rebuild for AWD from DBR is 825.00. Did you examine the bushings the way I described in one of my earlier post? Its a long shot, but definitely worth a look.
I've been at college all day. 40 miles away LOL ill check it tomorrow . Ill also check the rebuild kits for it

For the record, if it is falling out of 3rd/5th, there is a possibility that it was run with a bad leak. If the transmission fluid gets low, it will cause it to start falling out of gear just as described. Once it starts doing this, it will not stop. I would check the axle seals for leaks. Since you bought it this way, more than likely, it was doing this due to the previous owner not paying attention to leaks.

You would be better off getting a used transmission from a junkyard or another dsm'er than to tare it down and try to fix it. I had this happen to me (back when I knew just about nil about cars in general) and learned the hard way.

If it is just 3rd, may be another issue that I am not familiar with. Usually it will be 3rd and fifth that go first. Just my .02 worth for ya.

Its just 3rd. I drove it 50 miles home using 1-2-4-5 with no problems. No grinding or anything.

I would get a friend to check it out with you. Either you or him/her look at the lever when you shift it into third. See if the cable moves the lever all the way. When you put it in third, just see if it will move any more after the shifter in the car is all the way in third compared to the shifter at the end of the cable at the trans.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you have an issue within the trans but, checking all the little things first before you rip into the trans is always helpful.

Does the car have a short throw shifter in it? I had a friend who's kept popping out of gear, took off the center console and found the stupid pervious owner put the short throw on backwards. Don't ask me how in the hell it happened, some people are just that dumb. But never hurts to check to see.

I didn't get to check it yesterday. And with people coming over the weekend it might take me a few days to get to it. The car is bone stock. Did your friend have problems going into one gear or a couple?

Hey kchaazz, I use the dealership website for the prices </title> <meta name="Description" content="" /> <meta name="Keywords" content="" /> <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" /><style id="ctl00_idIE6" type="text/css"> </style><meta name="google-site-verification" content="bKz051mun. i took your advice given to ed1380 and after some long thinking, it just make sense to get a loan from a good friend of mine and go with the dog box racing tranny. I'm getting an act2100 with a 6puck spru&#241;g clutch kit(7 bolt so didnt want to go too heavy) don't worry ed1380....the guys at dog box are going to open my tranny to tell me what's wrong anyway so I will take photos and report my findings

I have an an AWD and when cold the car just put in drive feels like I am running over a brick.
