well the title says it all LOL i have noticed since i have own my car in 5 gear. when i let of the gas it the gear knob will move and when i put the gas on again it will move back. but here is the weird thing i was taking a bro to work 1 hour away cause he works at Pepsi . car ran good the whole way up there but when i was driving back home. just cruising going the speed limit all of a sudden my 5 gear pops out and the car revs high well my foot was still on the gas. but it did this 7-8 times so i had to drive 45 all the way home.and since then i haven drove on the highway i try and stay out of 5 gear. i was thinking it might be my syncors. but i am not for sure so please help me on this one thanks

It sounds like something I had with my 94. There's an article on VFAQ about shifter movement under the DRIVETRAIN section. I would stop driving your car immediately. The end gear in your trans might be loose and eating away at your end cover on your trans.

Take off the passenger wheel
remove the plastic wheel well cover
remove the 7 or 8 bolts that hold on the end of the transmission case
inside you'll see a couple gears with 36mm nuts on them- tighten those nuts and reassemble

Stop using 5th gear. You can fix this before 5th gear blows out the side of the transmission. You can even leave the transmission in the car for this.

Drain the fluid, take off the end case of the trans, and you'll see 5th gear. There is a huge nut that holds 5th gear. Alot of times, that nut can back off and it pushes itself against that outer case. This causes 5th gear to pop out.

Its like 34mm or 32mm or something close to that. If it hasnt damaged the case, you can tighten it back down. You should probably order a replacement nut. When its tight, use a hammer and punch to "pinch" it and lock it in place. You'll know what I'm talking about once you pull it apart.

Put it back together after you clean all the fluids off and use RTV to make a gasket.

Its pretty easy to do, its a messy job, but you can save your transmission. Just stop using 5th gear if you have to drive your car. My first DSM did this and I kept putting it back in 5th gear. 5th gear made its way of the end case and I watched it bounce on the ground and pass me on the highway. LOL

Just performed this on my transmission last night.^^ My input shaft 36mm nut was more than a qaurter turn loose. You can see the where the stake mark should be.

I was having engagement problems and sloppy 5th gear while cruising. I didn't have 5th gear popping out though.
