If you dicconect the battery and rehook it up ,will a auto trans shift slow or slip for a while , GM cars have a relearn , do DSM's?

I have an auto and changed my battery/ did other work that required the battery be disconnected. I dont recall having it act any different. Hopefully some other people can confirm.

No. why would you think that ? 2 of my friends have disconnected their battery to have them changed their auto is the same as always. The auto trannies on these dsm have very long gears.

The DSM auto transmission is adaptive but it has some short term non-volatile memory. If the battery is disconnected for only a few hours the current settings will be saved.
See Foreign Service | Motor | Find Articles at BNET for more details.

Over the last 330,000 miles on two auto Talons I have never had a problem with the transmission after replacing a battery. However after changing to an ATF with different friction characteristics, the TCU took a couple of hundred miles to find new settings that worked right.

I was upgrading the fuel system and I had the battery unhooked for 4-5 hours, Thinking back, I let the batt drain buy accident a few months back and I replaced the battery, had a 2-3 slip started on slight boost or higher shifts, 170 k miles so I thought it new trans time, well now after this last battery off cycle all forward shifts slip even at lite loads, I dont think the trans went out in those 5 hours of me working on fuel system, I read the above, 1995 gst- does the trans need some reset?

If the transmission was not slipping before disconnecting the battery it didn't fail while the battery was disconnected. No need to reset, that happened with power off.

Check the ATF level in an abundance of caution and drive for at least 200 miles to give the TCU a chance to relearn its settings.

If it continues to slip consider a friction modifier before any expensive tear down.

ww What type of friction modifier? also the 2-3 slip never went away even after 2 - k miles

If the 2-3 slip has been there for 2K miles it is unlikely to be related to TCU memory.

Are you checking the ATF level with the engine running? Not only must the engine be on to check the ATF but the Transmission must be at normal operating temperature, level, have just selected every gear briefly, and left in neutral (not park). Doing everything else right and checking in park will read about two quarts higher than actual. The owners manual has all of the details.

How long since the ATF has been changed? When my 98 TSI was new I power braked every day getting onto a county road with a short sight range and the tranny started slipping with less than 40K miles.

If the ATF has not been changed in the last 50K or so miles then put in new ATF+4.
If your last ATF refill was something besides Mopar ATF+4 you should add a bottle of Lubegard in the black bottle before trying anything expensive. Our transmissions are sensitive to the ATF.

Today, about 60 miles later it's starting to shift with less slips, im still taking it easy but things are looking up, The owner before me said he put B&M slick shift fuild in it, I can change the oil but does the converter have a drain?

as far as i know the converter does not have a drain, but you can take most of the transmission fluid by just unbolting the draing plug, and also dont forget to drain the differential as well. and as far a the transmission loosing memory you should have no worries:thumb:
