I am currently troubleshooting a 95 GST auto that I recently acquired. The car will not move in any gear by itself (OD off/on). I am however able to get it to move if I put it in drive and give it a little push. It'll start to move forward low idle. However, whenever the throttle is applied I get nothing from the car.

Things I have checked
TCU - all seemed to be well
Fluid level - also good
Shifting linkage for proper motion - check

I was told by the PO that the transmission made a "noise" and then stopped driving. This just days after changing the transmission oil. Perhaps the wrong oil was used, and now the TQ converter is slipping? I'm trying to gather thoughts prior to ripping apart the trans from engine. Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

Just an update, I removed the inspection plate, and had someone go throughout the gears. I didn't visually see anything wrong, or hear any noises. I'm unsure if the TQ converter should move positions through different gears (P,N,D etc). It did not move throughout the gear range.

You need a special adapter, and a gauge for testing the pressures. You can make sure the pump is working though by taking off the return line by the trans and making sure about a quart per minute is pumping out into a container while the car is idling.

I'll do that now, wouldn't it be easier to check it at the oil cooler I stead? I'm assuming the point in which you check it does not matter.

I took each line off of the oil cooler and individually ran it for about 10 seconds. I only got drips out of one line, and nothing out of the other (assuming it was probably the return). I'm assuming this means my trans pump is out.

Duh! Gah, not sure why I didn't think if that.. I'll give her a go in a little bit.

Make sure you have the trans in neutral, the pump doesn't pump in park
Yes sir, it pumps in Neutral.

Here are some videos for reference. It seems to have a humming at times in gear, and the dash lights go crazy.. (explicit language)

Started it again today.. I'm going to try and find the service manual to check the electronics.. If I still haven't found the issue Im going to lean towards the TQ Converter.

How much are you willing to put into this car? To be honest the auto trans is just utter crap in these cars. Only way you can spin the tires is a neutral slam. Maybe look into a 5speed conversion?

I actually have everything for the conversion.. I purchased the car with the intent to do every peice of maintenence possible and resell the car in excellent running condition. Keeping it automatic would keep my expenses lower.

No and no. Hopefully you were being sarcastic

I'm speaking from experience. I had 2 eclipse and 1 talon. out of the 3 1 was an auto, and I hated it. Maybe mine was shot, but since he's looking to resell the car and not keep it then I'd say keep it auto. Most of the time it's hard to make your money back with these cars.

Watching. Similar in my 99. I get reverse all the time. Forward only when cold th hen slips and no forward in any gear. If I shift it around and rev a bit, shut car off and back on she will catch 1st. Shift to 2 sometimes 3 then slip after a while then loose forward again. I get a low level whine in neutral, no so much when in gear, even when Trans isn't catching I don't get a whine, only in nuetral. I do hear solenoids in L 2 and 3 and reverse. They don't stop making noise though. In my case, fluid is gone. No red what so ever. Going to try new filter and fluid. If no go, got full swap. Just need flywheel and clutch. Would like to keep auto though.

Recheck the fluid, drain it all & drop the pan. The fluid & pan will let you know if there's a problem. When we blew our auto trans the first time, it was 100% evident just in the smell of the fluid as it drained. I have a strong stomach, but that smell may have gagged a maggot. The bottom of the pan was covered in charcoal colored clutch material as well as gold and silver flakes. However, after replacing the guts of the tranny, we still had problems. Good thing is that whenever we checked the pan after that, there wasn't anything in the bottom. Still had to replace o-rings, but the gears & clutch packs were fine.
Long story short, just check the pan first.

Drained, and put more fluid. Nothing seems out of the ordinary, and nothing on the drainpan bolt. I do however have the flashing brake, coolant, and battery light though as shown in the video. Perhaps the alt isn't making enough/to much voltage and tossing the tcu off? It's a long shot, but figure I'd throw it out there.

Recheck all of the battery connections, even the grounds, clean everything up so there's a good connection everywhere. You can take the battery and alternator to Advanced Auto and they'll check them for free. Electronic shift trans needs good juice. Atleast this is still free compared to tranny work

Figure I could update everyone.. I pulled the pan, only to find large chunks of metal inside. Thanks for everyone's help!
