Alright, so recently we acquired a 2G AWD for next to nothings. Engine runs gorgeously. Only downside is it had no reverse. For the price, a few hundred, I was willing to take the bet. All forward gears work great - just would not pick up reverse at all. Upon getting it home and dropping the pan I found large chunks of aluminum and copper. LARGE chunks. Obviously something mechanically is damaged with reverse. I'm not ready to dish out $1000 for a rebuild, and apparently shipping is retarded (quotes of $400 to ship) for a private buy.

With the help of some great friends, we located an AWD Auto Transmission at a salvage yard. Upon pulling the pan, this is what was found. I know that metallic collection and goop is 'normal' in an automatic trans, thus the use of several magnets - but is this beyond average? No large chunks were found or anything of the sort. There were a couple of small pieces as shown in the picture but that's it.

Input? $150 is much better than $800. In the least, if for some reason a gear is having issues, as long as the reverse hard parts are good, I could rebuild one trans using the other.

Bud, if I don't get this trans issue sort out soon, it might be going for a bit more than what I paid for it.

As long as the 98 stays in your possesion..You can do whatever you want bro..

So when you guys took the trans out thats what you found.Any plans on replacing the end clutches or adding a shift kit. There both cheap mods for the auto trans. And rebuilding an auto trans is butter compared to lining all the crap up in a manual trans.

I myself would have just taken the auto trans apart that came with the car, took it apart and ordered stuff for it.

Onyx? The one in my Avatar? She's going nowhere. Going to get new shoes tomorrow.

End clutches might be in the equation if I go that route. I haven't taken an Auto trans apart, but I have a Manual, so if it's easier that makes me happy. Rebuild equipment seems expensive as all get out - then again I only looked at IPT.

My hope is that this trans is alright and that I can potentially get some feedback on it - assuming to get it in and use the 96 as a DD. However before I do that I want to see what people have to say about the amount of build up here. I've seen them worse, I've seen them have none. Just want to see if this is normal wear.

I'm not an expert, and yes IPT stuff seems pretty pricey. But then when you weigh out what the tool will cost to rent + parts+fluid,Your looking at least half of the cost to get it rebuilt from a shop.

You have the knowlage and skills to do it.I don't doubt that at all.

That doesnt look normal to me, me and a buddy of mine changed out all the seals and everything on my trans when the pan was dropped it was clear nothing like that at all, sorry i cant be more help then that to you. But heres a link on how to add a translab shift kit for you. 2G Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX Translab Shift Kit Install and here is where to buy it Translab Shift Kit (High Performance Type) it doesnt cost that much but ive heard that auto trans are a pain in the but to work on. never done it myself but, so i dont know. I do however have the kit in my trans and its amazing.

IT migh be person to person.I'm just saying for my dumbass the auto trans was the easiest to rebuild.

And the manual trans were a PITA to get everything to line up when you went to finish it up.But again it could just be me..

Hey, no. Thanks for the info! Any little bit helps. No need to apologize for a lack of detailed info. :) That's why I posted here - because I'm not too knowledgeable in the Auto department and am looking for some feedback from others who have had hands-on experience in a greater depth than I have. I'm still in shock I got my Talon running, much-less messing with the trans on another Talon - so yeah. Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Your still overthinking it.Take one of the trans apart and inspect the clutches and drums ETC.Then see if you need new clutches or hardparts,Check how the valve body looks. You know do a nice once over, its allready out so Why not.

This thread makes me want to read up on my auto trans knomemclature..< Spelled wrong

You gotta get in there, all that blood and peices of brain you need to soak that SHHH up..Do a nice once over, we dont need to eat off of it.It just needs to not look like somebody just got there head blown off in here.

What was the condition of the car the salvage trans came out of ? If it wasn't wrecked, I'd be hesitant...A non-wrecked car means an engine failure or trans.....
As far as shipping, $75-$150 to ship a trans..You have to strap it to a pallet and contact a freight shipping company....

It was supposed engine failure. But nonetheless, I was able to get in contact with a shipping company that didn't want to screw me. $130 on a mid-sized pallet. :) Everyone else was trying to scourge my nameless cavities at $400+ to a business. And that's without taking me to dinner!

Haha. But I got it sorted. Getting a somewhat built 2G AWD Trans with decent shipping. ;)

However for educational purposes -the condition of the magnets above are within tolerance?

i service transmissions all the time and i see that on the magnets all the time with no problems .
