Here's a quick short background on what's going on.

I have an Automatic 95 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. Motor went bad so a I purchased a motor off a Manual 97 Eclipse GST. I seperated the clutch and flywheel from the GST motor and swapped over the center Dowel to the GST motor from my Auto motor. I did not switch over the Plate that sits between the motor and tranny. "They looked the same" I mated the auto tranny to the block and dropped it all in.

After hooking everything back up and attempting to start the motor, the engine would turn over but you would hear a slight "CRRRK" sound like trying to start a car that's already on. The motor never did start because the starter stopped spinning the engine, it just went "CRRRK" and no more spinning.

So I took a look underneath and noticed the teeth on the torque converter were slightly eaten away.. it's very slight and just on the outside as if the starter isn't making proper contact and was only hitting the edge of the teeth.

My question to you all.. Is the mounting plate different for a M/T and A/T on a 2G?

is there is difference in thickness? is the hole for the starter slightly offset? Can I shim the starter somehow to make it work? Let me know..

Thanks,
Rudy

The starter plates are different on AWD and FWD, your supposed to match the starter plate to the trans but it seems like the starter shouldn't have bolted up if the starter plate was wrong?

that's the strange thing, the starter went on with no problem at all...

I haven't looked at it very closely but it seems like the starter isn't close enough to the teeth of the torque converter.

I'll need to pull the starter and check it out.. sucks if i have to change out the plate... dropping the trans after everything is already put back together is not gonna be fun :( LOL

These are for 2g's.

MD194962 - FWD M/T, FWD A/T, AWD A/T
MD167356 - AWD M/T

FWD manual and AWD auto plates are the same.

ok cool.. so it's not the starter plate.. hmm..

maybe it's the starter?? I know this sounds dumb but with all the problems I've had with this "JDM" tranny, I wouldn't doubt that the damn starter has different Splines to match up with the "JDM" torque converter teeth..

I just emailed the company that sold me the tranny because they had stated that the starter would be included and it didn't get shipped with the tranny..

I know that someone had told me that they had never heard of a "JDM" 2g Tranny before.. but I noticed that on ebay, all the "JDM" tranny's have mechanical speed sensors and a few differences than the ones listed as "US"... Mine was no different and had the mechanical speed sensor which I swapped out for my electronic speed sensor.. those were the only real differences tho but now there could be more as the torque converter might be different.. i'll have to match it against my old one... i also noticed that some ebay auctions state that these "JDM" tranny's have No Lockup feature.. not sure if that matters..

I just read something interesting while searching around here. sometimes, it seems that when a starter is old and going out, it does not fully extend which can cause grinding and bad starts.. The starter was working fine a couple of months back the last time it was used but it has been sitting around for about 2 months...

I think my battery is weak and thus not giving full power to my starter (which may be going bad).. combination of the 2 could definitely be causing the issues.. plus the engine hasn't been started in awhile so the extra time it would take to get it started is also probably not doing me any favors with a weak battery/bad starter.. I'll have the battery charged and change out the starter and hopefully it will fix my problem.. I will let you all know if I fix the problem..

If the gear ratio is different then yes it does apply, your tranny more than likel came from a RVR because they are the only cars compatible with the 2g that have usable trannys.

What I meant was that I didn't think the gear ratio was different...

I think your right about the tranny coming out of an RVR. I looked up some info on google and found a few people who had purchaed an AWD JDM Auto Tranny and are having Axle Fitment Issues and Starter issues just like mine.

The solution for the axle was a simple one which was just to shave it down a bit cause it's a little long.. The starter issue might be resolved by using a 1G starter but I'm not sure, I'll have to look into that.

As for the difference in Gear Ratio, can anyone verify this?? I've seen that another rear diff for Manuals is required but I'm not sure if the Auto RVR's had the same rear diff as 2nd Gen DSM's...

Thanks for anymore info. I will definitely make a little log of all the problems and changes I've had to make if I get this thing running..

Update:
I spoke to a seller from Ebay who is selling this tranny. He includes a different transfer case and intermediate shaft as well as the starter..

I asked him why and he said because these tranny's being Japanese are a little different. he said he does these swaps daily and that the gearing is in the transfer case so using the transfer case from a US model will solve your gearing problem. He also said that the intermediate shaft is just shaved down a bit to allow it to fit properly. He didn't give me any details on the starter but I'm assuming he's using one off a 1st gen.. He seemed to be pretty knowledgeable.. had a heavy japanese accent but was fairly easy to understand..

That's pretty much it. can anyone verify that this information is correct??

I'll just put my original Transfer case on, shave down my axle, and find the right starter and be good to go...

The transfer cases from 95-96 and 97-99 are differnt and you are supposed to use them with a trans from the same years so it dosent sound correct that he said to just a US model transfer case since they arent all the same. I have not heard of a JDM trans, auto or manual working in a 2g without changing gears in the trans or the rear diff. You need to find out what the final drive ratio is on that trans.
