This past weekend was the 40th annual Sno*Drift in Atlanta, Michigan! This was the first event of the 2006 Rally America National Championship series. All the information about the race history, final standings, and other such things can be found at the Rally America website and the official Sno*Drift website:

There were plenty of DSMs on hand showing that we're good for more than just street and strip. They faired well in their classes, taking 3rd in the Sno Regional Rally and 2nd and 3rd in the Drift Regional Rally.

The race was a lot of fun. I'm hoping I'll be able to make it to the other two rally events that are held in Michigan later in the season.

DSM's have always put on a good show in rally racing. It's great to see so many of them out there kicking butt doing what they do best. Great pictures!

Looks like a total blast :thumb:

Hey, I know John and Adam in the teal car, its like the twin of mine, good to see they survived the first day and did well in Drift. Also strange to see the Himes brothers in a PGT DSM.

That looks fun, but I'd probably total my car in under 12 seconds. The headlights on that red 1gb talon look crazy.

All of my pictures from the rally (90 total) can be found here. You probably don't want to see them anyway as all the good photos are all ready posted here (all the DSM and EVO pictures:thumb: ). On the other hand, if you want to see pictures of a bunch of subarus and a few other cars, go ahead and check them out.

In all seriousness, there are some cool pictures there and it'd be worth looking at.

Enjoy,
-dexter

Still looks like a total blast though, snow drifting:rocks:

Greg

It really wasn't that cold last weekend. It was mid 40's during the day. I was just wearing my hoody for most of the afternoon. Then again, I'm from Michigan, so cold to me is like 20.LOL It was an absolute blast though. I would highly recomend that everyone go watch a rally race if they get the chance. Since SpeedTV cancelled their WRC coverage, seeing a rally live is the only way you're going to see it now.

Glad you like the pictures, Greg. I liked yours too when you were doing the write-ups from the past race season.

A couple of those cars look familiar to me. I'm sure i've seen a few of them at the lspr rally in houghton, MI. Does anyone on here go to that? It's in october.

i haven't gone to it. i didn't even know michigan had any rally events until i saw the lake superior event on oOLN last... i think it was december? anyways, i'd love to be able to go up there and one of my friends here is planning on hitting up all three michigan rallies next season with his mazda. i'd like to go to the other two events this year and maybe in the future participate as well. if no one else starts a thread, i'll start one in the regional forum about getting all the dsm guys together to go watch and hang out. i think it'd be a lot of fun.:thumb:

How did I miss this thread??? WTF

This is so cool, and with factory backing for some of the teams. Nice pictures too. That looks like big time fun. I know Randy Pobst ran these cars in Rally, in '90 when they 1st came out, and the team ran 1st & 2nd in class that year.

For the last two years I have been pit crew for some guys with an 89 GTI. It would be cool to know some of the other people in the pits. I've talked to a few guys before and borrowed some stuff, I still don't really know anyone though. Sometiems it's hard to go check out stages and pit crew at the same time.

i was lucky enough to get to hang out witht he clearcut racing subaru team and got to help out a little bit during the saturday services. you can see some up close pictures of my other friends hard at work during service in the photobucket link above.

I ran that rally a billion years ago, in a stock-engined Datsun 510 w/African Safari suspension.
It was bitterly cold, with a foot of snow over black ice.
I hit the fastest speed I ever saw on a rally -- 100 mph, as fast as that lil 510 could go -- on Flying Volvo stage, a paved road to a fishing camp that was closed and unplowed in the winter.
We restarted after the midnight meal halt (yes, we ran at NIGHT!) fourth on the road, but I suffered brain fade big time and we came in 8th overall.

I think about getting back into pro rallying every now and then, but I don't have the stones for it any more. Throwing a car sideways on ice or gravel at 80 mph just isn't in the cards for me any more. I think I'll just stick to safe, sane NASA road racing.

I have a huge amount of respect for rally drivers, and know I am no longer competitive.

On the other hand, I have a cage, engine, AWD and all the necessary safety stuff on my 90 Eclipse GSX, so all I need is suspension and underbody protection. What's involved? I have a Ground Control system: can it be cranked up enough to get ground clearance, or is something else involved? Is there a rally thread somewhere covering DSM rally prep? This is just out of curiosity, of course. It does get a little boring around here from October to April. Maybe they have an old geezer class for folks like me. I see my old nemesis Scott Harvey is still out there running rallies, so maybe there's hope.

Rich

Nice to see the pictures. I was supposed to go up there as part of a crew for one of the teams, but we weren't able to get the car done in time and dropped out of the event the day before. Oh well, we've got STPR and LSPR still this year...
