Edmonton,
Hey Guys,
Well I bought all the mods to support my 20 PSI driver:

190 Fuel Pump
Evo Injectors
AFPR
DSMLink
MBC
Wideband

I rebuilt my engine last year. Did everything properly. The head has 3g lifters and is mildly ported. The bottom end has stock internals, and a Multi-layer steel head gasket. I have a 16g that has a lot of boost creep up to 22 psi, which I ope to dumb down when I install the MBC, but other than that. Should I be able to run 20 PSI on a daily driver? I am probably only going to drive it like 3 months of the year, but I like my car and if 20 psi is too much then I will turn it down. I have all the supporting mods, and I am not cheeping out on anything. I just want to make sure that 20psi will be ok going through my car with these internals. I like to go to the track every once and a while for a weekend warrior kinda thing, but not that often. So can I do this safely if I have all the supporting mods and properly tune? Thanks guys!
John

absolutely no reason why you can't run 20 psi on a 16g all day every day on stock internals and head bolts.

I ran 22-23 psi on my 16g for almost 2 years with no problems whatsoever. This was with dsmlink and injectors on a supra sidemount. Never had any problems whatsoever.

Just get dsmlink tuned nice and you will be happy.

Good luck
Garrett

PS post a log on the dsmlink forums and myself or anyone of the other members will be happy to check it out for you and make sure things look ok.

See, the problem with that question is that some people might have gotten away with running 20+psi without arp studs, but others say that they would never do that. What is the safe boost level to arp the motor, not the level that you might be able to get away with? If you want to run 20 on a dd, you may not want to be running a setup that is barely on the safe side.

I do agree that arp's are a nice plus.....and for 100 bucks....it is cheap insurance.

Regardless...at that power level i really don't feel that you will have any sort of catastrophic failure. I would say worst case scenario you lift the head and/or start pushing coolant. IF that happens, pull the head and put the headgasket of your choice and arp studs and be done with it.

Use this information at your own discretion. I am not here to tell you that your motor will live a long happy life at 20psi...but in my experience the motor is more than capable of handeling what you are throwing at it. Just don't be choked if something does go wrong.

I just built a 5000 dollar long block and i already have a spare block, t case, pistons, rods, crank sitting around cause when you start playing with big horse power...well...you just never know.....

Awsome responses guys! Thanks for all the help. I forgot to mention I do have a multi-layer head gasket on my car. I did not us ARP head bolts. How hard is it to install them? Should I be fine with the stock ones? I will probably do a conservative tune for my dd probably 15 maybe 17 psi, and then a more agressive tune with 20 when I go to the track. Also THANK YOU SO MUCH for whoever volunteered to help me with DSM Link. I think I am over my head with this program and I really appreciate all the helpful input. I want to learn how to tune and I am very excited about it! Any more input?

A FMIC or meth injection is really a must if you want to run 20psi, otherwise you'll just push hot air and knock badly, which is never good for a motor. Assuming a good FMIC, then yes you should be able to do this, just be careful about knock and watch your injector duty cycles (commonly referred to as IDC's) and make sure that they stay well under 100%, personally I think anything over 90% and you are running out of injector. As far as changing out to ARP studs, you can do it with the head still on the car, just take out the stockers and replace them with ARPs one at a time, be sure to use ARP Moly Lube. As Far as DSMLink goes make sure to register your copy and go to DSMLink User Group Forums or use the Engine Management subforum here (once you can, that is). Post a log up and plenty of people will be able to help. Hope that helped.

Ok guys, now another question. Since I want to be as safe with this as possible a couple guys said I should have a FMIC. Now I am on a budget here, so what is a reasonable brand that is easy to install. I don't know the differeances between any of them, that and I don't want to remove and crash beams or whatever. I just need a small one I think. Nothing overly high output. What about this one on ebay? Is it actually a 1g one?

Thanks guys!

haha...i just noticed you are in stettler alberta...I work in fort mcmurray.

Check out Calgarydsm.com if you havent already. There might be someone on there selling an intercooler.

Id look at that ebay item but im at work so im SOL.

That is awsome you are so close. You come to Edmonton often?

Every once in awhile yeah. My car is in the okanagan (BC) so i go there a lot. Im headed there this wednesday.

I worked on the rigs near stettler for a little while. :D

Running my car on the new setup this weekend at the 1/8 mile.

Put it this way dude. I broke my motor in at 20 psi on a turbo that puts out close to 400whp at that pressure.....i will run it at well over 25psi ALLLL the time after this. Check my profile for the mods...

that ebay ad has a 2g intercooler and a 1g piping. i use that piping and i can tell you that intercooler willnot work
