2.3l better than 2.4l?

It seems like everyone chooses 2.3l stroker over the 2.4l is there some reason for that? is one cheaper than the other by a lot, more reliable, better for making power/tq? I had been plannig to do a 7 bolt high compression 2.4 but it seems like the 2.3l is more prevalent on the forums which makes me think a 2.3l might be a better option?:aha::confused:
 
The 2.3 is more common because more people on here have 4g63s. They can't easily make a 2.4 out of it so they make a 2.3 with the commonly available stroker kits. 4g64s or g4cs have .1l more displacement with the same rod ratio. If both motors are built forged than the 2.4l will out perform the 2.3l. I think if you are building the motors prices would be similar for both. 2.4l ftw

I don't know if this is correct or not but I do believe the 4g63 block is bored out at .2 over bore rather than the typical .02 over bore making it a 2.3l. The 2.4 block is from a different motor, though I can't remember which.

If that were true I'd assume its because people would rather have the block that was built for boost?:hmm:
 
gusu, the 4g63 is turned in to a 2.3l by a "stroker kit" which includes a crank from the 4g64 (2.4l) and pistons with custom wrist pins. I believe boring that much would leave you with no cylinder walls. Both motors can hand boost the same if they have forged internals which cost about the same for both blocks.

Cool now I know. I remember some guy saying he wanted to get his block bored .20 over and someone said if he did that it would be a 2.3l, so that's what I was basing it off.

I've never really looked into how stroking works but thought I'd respond and get some insight as to what really goes on.

Nobody bores a 4G engine that much. The typical overbore is 0.020", but some people forget to put in the extra "0" after the decimal point and write 0.2, which probably comes from the hotrodder slang of "bored twenty over".

Both are as unreliable as the next since the rod ratio is the same. Therefore piston speed and the amount of torque on the crank is similar. 2.3 is more popular for some reason.
 
2.3L Is just more popular because you don't have to track down a 4g64/G4CS block and you dont have to machine it for oil squirters.

Of course if you dont care about oil squirters and/or allready have a 2.4 block it would be just as easy to make a 2.4. I think the only thing required is the timing belt from a dual cam galant with the 2.4. IIRC They were only produced for one year in the states.
 
How is 2.4 block a stroker guys? It has a taller deck, it isn't exactly a stroker. If you use a 2.4 block and crank, then you will do nothing other than build a 2.4 turbo engine. It isn't exactly a stroker.

You can also destroke it to a 2.2 or 2.1 and it get more rev and more displacement.
 
Mitsu makes the 2.4L block, not Chrylser. It's essentially a 4G63 bored 60 over with a 7mm higher deck and more fluid passages, minus oil squirters.

Common concensus is you don't need oil squirters if you're going with forged pistons, so why get them machined in?
 
Pretty much what everyone said. I built a 2.3 instead of a 2.4 simply because I already had a 6 bolt 4G63 block on hand so I was closer to building it. Pretty much there are just more people that already have 4G63 blocks.

There are two things I don't completely agree with in your post, but they are really only my personal opinion:

1) In every application I've ever seen, it's technically only a "stroker" if the crank has a longer stroke than the one originally in the block you're using, personally I wouldn't call a 2.4 a stroker. In my opinion it's like calling a long rod 2.0L a stroker.

2) The redline isn't set in stone. If you increase valve size, port the head, blah blah blah, you'll see lower velocity through the valve. The bottom end can be built to withstand higher rpm than the head can support. Redline can mean different things to different people though, like where the safe max rpm is versus the risk of taking the engine higher and trusting it to hold together, versus the rev range where the engine setup actually makes any usable power.
 
2.4 isn't a stroker. It's a 4g64 or g4cs block with a stock 100mm crank.

This is correct, but the 2.3L has pistons that have a compression height of 28.7mm where as the 2.4 block has pistons with a compression height of 35mm.
Yes, rod length is the same.
Yes, rod lengths between the two are the same, but in a 2.4L block there is room to put 156mm rods and move the wrist pin up 6mm effectively making the 2.4L a long rod 2.4L and increasing it's rod ratio to 1.56 vs the 2.3's at 1.50.

This is correct.
Only way to stroke a 2.4L block is to put in a crank with more stroke.
Or you can destroke it using a crank with < 100mm stroke.

OE bore diameter of the 4G63 is 85mm.
OE bore diameter of the 2.4L is 86.5mm, or .060" overbore.
The deck height of a 4G63 is 229mm.
The deck height of a 4G64 is 235mm.
