Hi everyone, I own an auto wreckers in San Jose, ca and 2016 gave me a beautiful present (and money pit) to start off 2017 with. When I seen my tow truck driver come back with it on the back of the truck I thought "another piece of junk" then I heard Paul Walker say, "you have no faith, pop the hood" and realized it was a 1991 Eagle Talon TSI AWD.

I began trying to figure out whats wrong with it and get it started, which lead me to blown head gasket. I found another engine but quickly realized there is a few slight differences between the two even though they are both 4g63t engines. Hoping you guys can help me out.

The engine I got is from a 1991 Eclipse turbo and came without a turbo so I pulled the original to check the spline which was good. I noticed lots of or almost all of the turbo piping is different, the timing cover and valve covers are different, and the coil pack/distributor setup, however my interchange programs say that the engines should be the same. I did some researching and couldn't find the reason for these differences except the eclipse engine possibly being a 7-bolt and my original being a 6-bolt. What I want to know is can I use this engine and what should I change to make it work. If my assumptions are right, I will covert the 7 bolt engine over to get the car running and build a 6-bolt monster. I want to get it running and driving before spending a bunch of money on the build so I can know how the rest of the car functions. Thanks and any help would be appreciated guys. Pics of new car.

Tried to use the search function and can't find anything about these two engines being different. I'm extremely new to this and need an engine for my 91 TSI AWD so I bought one from a 91 Eclipse. There seem to be subtle differences like the pipe in the oil pan for the turbo and other turbo piping, the valve cover, timing cover, oil filter housing and coil/distributor set up and possibly more. I checked both VINs and what they came out of are accurate but maybe someone did a swap on one of the cars before. Can someone tell me what these differences are and if I can make it work. Thanks

The engine with "Eclipse" written on the exhaust manifold is a 2G engine. It doesn't/won't bolt-in to a 1G car.

Hello and Welcome

The engine with red plug wires is a 6 bolt
The 2nd one looks like a 2g 7 bolt maybe? It's definitely a 7 bolt but the intake looks like a 2g.
Need more pics of the replacement engine to tell. The turbo in the pics is a 14b which came stock on the 1g manual turbo cars from 1990-1994. Is The red car an auto or manual? Donor engine car a manual or auto and what year is the donor engine?

Thanks for the replies guys. The red car is a 5-speed and the donor car is a manual also and it is a for sure 7-bolt engine. The turbo in the picture looks similar or identical to the one that came off of my car which is why this was puzzling to me. The "TD05H" stamp is on both of them, but unfortunately the wrecking yard that sold me the donor engine sold the exhaust manifold and turbo before I got to it. More pics

Tdo5 just refers to the compressor housing. Several turbos will have tdo5 on the housing. Also 2g engine in 1g is not a direct swap. Better off finding a 1g 6 bolt. Also 1g 14b tdo5 turbo is a bit better then a 2g turbo.

I'm having trouble finding a 1G engine so I'm going to tear this down and see if I can rebuild it.

Please understand what we are telling you. That engine isn't a direct drop-in replacement for a 1G car. The block does not have provisions for a front roll stop (engine mount) so you'll only be holding the powertrain in at three points rather than four as it is meant to be. If you want to run without that, that's your call -- I wouldn't.

As has been suggested already, it would be a much better idea to find another 1G engine.

I understand completely and wouldn't run like that. I'm going to return the 2G and get my money back. Then I'll tear the head off and see what I can do with this engine and if I'm lucky its just a head gasket and hydro locked. Worst case I would have to find another engine I guess. Labor and parts are cheap for me because of my profession but I still can't find a used one for under $1200 and I have to get it from the east coast. Any suggestions on what to do from here would be appreciated. Thanks for all the help everyone.
