1st Compression Test - Dry and Wet Results - Update

Dry test.

Car warmed up, fuel pump disabled, all plugs removed, 6 second crank.

Any feedback? They are low, but there are 180,000 on this engine.. advice?

Steps needed to take?

Do a leak down test now to find out what is wrong with it. Could just be a bad head gasket. But 180,000 miles on the stock engine is a lot of miles. It could probably use a rebuild.

Put a capfull of oil in each cylinder and redo your compression tests. I agree with ProjectGS though - that's an awful lot of miles.

I agree with doing a wet test. If that makes all the difference, it's rings. If not, a leakdown test will tell you more. FYI, the link below might be helpful.

Reasoning for the tests: White smoke from exhaust after warm-up.

Additional notes during wet test:

1) After removing 3rd spark plug, plenty of white smoke pouring out. Smoke coming from open exhaust valve?
2) During compression test on 3rd cylinder, smoke came out of 4th cylinder.
3) After putting plugs back in, reconnecting fuel pump and starting the car, tons of white smoke - I would assume this is only from the oil in the cylinders after performing the wet test.

I don't have a leakdown tester as of yet, but from what I have done so far, I would like to know what everyone thinks.

White Smoke - Coolant
Blueish Smoke - Oil
Black Smoke - Fuel

Do you have any oil residue on the back bumper? With bad rings you generally accumulate it on the bumper through the exhaust.

What does your coolant look like? Does it have some oil floating around in it? Or vice versa: is there coolant in your oil? This will indicate a bad head gasket

If it smokes on startup or after idling for a minute or two does it blow smoke out the tail pipe? This could indicate bad valve guides/seals

Poured White smoke after test...

Exhaust sticks out further than the bumper...

I'll check the coolant for any oil residue.

When starting it.. nothing.. after about 2 or 3 minutes, it starts throwing white smoke out of the exhaust - and doesn't stop.

Do you have any overheating problems?

It's seeming to sound more and more like a bad head gasket to me.

i think it's a combination of bad headgasket, and worn out rings. Oil won't make the compression rise if its truely just a headgasket/valve issue.

at 180k, is a lot of miles especially not knowing who took care of the car during those miles. I'd consider a rebuild or swap of some sort.

IMHO, it's time for a rebuild. You may have a leaky head gasket, but it wouldn't be much more labor to do everything else while you're in there. Obviously your rings are worn out - that much is evident by your compression test. I'd do a leakdown test now - that will give you a better idea of what needs particular attention during your rebuild. If your power expectations aren't too high, you could most certainly get away with a stock rebuild. If you order parts through Parts Dinosaur it would not be horribly expensive at all.

Without starting a new thread: How important is it to be at W.O.T while cranking? I mean, i disabled the fuel pump for the test, so .. does it matter or make a difference?

If you want an accurate compression test, then you need the throttle plate open all the way while performing it.

I have done both a WOT and closed throttle test back to back on the same motor with similar results on each cylinder.

I've also done WOT and closed throttle compression tests without much difference. It's not going to get you those missing 40psi, and it's not going to make the wet vs. dry numbers much closer.
