I'm getting a 1gb tsi today from a buddy of mine, the car runs good(also synchros in first and second are going out and it has an idle surge that breaks hearts haha). when he first got the car it didnt idle surge as bad, but as time has moved on so has the idle surge. it only does it on the initial start, after about of 15mins worth of running it stops. the car is all stock except for a turboXS blow off valve(to the atmosphere, no way to recirculate). the maf that was on it had been hacked pretty good, broke, cut, then tried to be glued back together, so we figured that maybe it was just the maf throwing the car off, so we got a new one and replaced it. that did not fix the problem.

so what im wondering is if the blow off valve can be causing the problem? since its stock maf, with no tune or anuthing, can that be a vaccum leak since its to the atmosphere and not able to be recirculated??

It's probably not causing the problem, but it is surely the root of a problem. Get a 1g bov (technically a bpv) and the recirc. hose.

Have you checked the ecu, fuel pump and filter? Start there for easy fixes.

well im doing a 2g maf on it with a new intake tube and pigtails. see if that fixes the problem, but yes i believe the fuel filter and pump were okay, have not had the ecu checked tho, how do you go about that?

EDIT: The way I originally read your first post, I thought the car itself stops. You meant the idle surge stops. Disregard the ecu comments. Read the posted above, do what it says step by step, and your idle surge will go away :thumb:

Putting in a 2g maf might complicate things more and probably won't fix the problem.

If it's a 1g, the ecu is behind the radio. Remove the two carpeted partitions that are on either side of the shifter (five screws I think). From there, you can peek behind the radio and shifter where you can see the ecu mounted vertically by three bolts (2 bolts on the driver side, 1 on the pass.).

Unplug the three harnesses, take it out, and then open it up to look at the circuit board. Depending on the miles, the capacitors may have reached their life expectancy and begun leaking. This may or may not be the only problem with the ecu.

I'll also add that the ecu may not be the problem at all, but it's an easy check.

haha sorry i didnt make my first post very clean man! :ohdamn:

well my buddy did a 2g maf and the injen intake and the pigtails and he was able to keep his bov to the atmosphere with no problems.

i believe the ecu is okay, but no the fuel pump and filter have not been replaced, so i will try that, and i will also try the gaskets on the TB but i believe he had already replaced those. i was trying to stay outta the 1g and 2g dsm game after i got my 2006 evo IX rs, but i need a daily driver to keep miles off my evo haha.
