Am I crazy? So I'm looking at the engine bay tonight thinking I got to get this painted soon, and come across this one bolt still left in the engine bay and then went on a hunt. What the hell was this bolt for? Did I remove something and put the bolt back for some reason or was it never used for anything? If it wasn't what is it's purpose? It's been so long since that part of the teardown (like ten years). Here are some photos if anyone can tell me what this bolt is for I would appreciate it. It's the bolt above the evaporater/heater core copper lines.

No clue, non of my old photos from the Teardown show anything, this was a completely original OEM car no mods at that point. What’s the square black box with round cylinder on the left side?

On 2G’s, there is a bolt from the engine side of the firewall that helps secure the hvac evaporator housing.

The location of your bolt, in relation to the two firewall holes for heater core hoses, indicate that may be it.

I don’t think so, this bolt doesn’t protrude through the inside of the firewall. There must be a void/cavity there. It’s about 3 3/4” above the heater hose holes.

Solution
I just told my son, "now he's gonna be lookin for that dam bracket" and he reminded me that it is the same bracket that holds the brake lines on, for everyone's information. :thumb:

I am looking at your pictures and you have that bracket but it is in a different place.
We need a member that has a 1992 MANUAL trans car to take a look under their hood. Mitsubishi changed their minds so much sometimes that in 92, that is for something else.
I'm going to go look at my 92 AUTO car and see what is there and post a new picture.

So....we are still wondering what went there. That is strange.

Well hell Marty now I’m still confused, LOL. It’s not my style to take anything off without bagging, labeling, and pictures so I’m kinda leaning towards that bolt was just in there serving no purpose as the bracket was next to it as you identified in my old photo, good eyes btw.

My 90 is the same as Marty's and uses that bolt for the clutch line the 90 is also an AWD and my others are FWD so not sure if that makes any difference either. My 93 FWD has the clutch line run under the bolt and uses a mount bolt down and to the left. My 91 FWD that started life as an auto does not have any bolt hole. My 91's that are factory manuals have cruise so I can't see on those.

Very strange that they would put the money and effort into that extra bolt and hole since they obviously were able to produce the cars without them Seeing the autos didn't have them. Must have been something that got left on a sketch by mistake. Wonder if they got the issue fixed by the 1994 cars?

My 91 AWD Manual, non-cruise has that bolt but nothing fastened down. Just a bolt keeping debris out. Next to it is the clutch line hold down.

That is exactly what @DreamChaser7 has going on. Just rando bolt in rando hole I guess......:idontknow:
I am anxious to see if one of our members has a solution to this mystery bolt/hole that autos didn't have and standards didn't use (except 1990???).

So I guess the BIGGEST question now is do I pull it or paint around it? Lol
I think I’ll pull it so paint is 100% complete and reinsert fresh bolt. Hell it might make a good mounting point for something later on?

Yes! Take good care of that nice threaded hole! It's a good sturdy mounting point for something someday.
Like what I did, here, lower attach point for my FPR bracket to firewall.
I would say, put some anti-seize on a nice clean bolt and put it in there to preserve the threads for future use.
