Hello everyone,
We have noticed that the 1G Seatbelt retractor is just plain garbage, it can cause serious injury if not death with the usual 1 foot of slack.

Everyone that owns a 1st Gen Talon/Eclipse/Laser please post the following. I want to take this to Chrysler Canada, as well as transportation boards as the seat belt retractor seems to be faulty on quite a few members cars. This is for the driver side only.

Please post the following after you vote.

Name/Location
Year/Make/Model
US or Canada Model
How much slack is in the seatbelt (feet)?

I BEG EVERYONE WITH A 1st Gen to please vote and include the following information, I am printing this off to fax, so please dont post anything else in this thread except for the information that is needed.

Below is a sample post, do it exactly like that please.

Bringing it back! PM for life!

Haha I didn't even know this was a concern. I thought they were talking about the auto belt, I read Canada and I was like wait they didn't even have those. Kinda weird I hear people would swap them out, I wouldn't see why they would go to a style that had these issued.

TO Mr. Thread Reviver (rdwng2),
Spray some WD-40 up in there. Could be gummed up.

4pt harnesses ftw if its that big of an issue.

I have a Canadian model and the retractors don't work at all. They do a great job of hanging out my door when I park.

The 1990 Talon we have doesn't have any slack. Its electric and American model. FYI

I bought a set of Canadian belts to swap into a friend's car awhile back and the driver's side didn't retract. I took it apart and fixed it, very simple concept but pretty difficult to perform. There's a metal roller spring that controls the retracting mechanism, and the spring gets fatigued over time and cracks, causing it to bind. My fix was to just snap off the broken section and remove it. In my case, this left plenty of spring to re-roll it and install it. Worked perfectly afterwards.

Another option for both US and Canadian cars is to find a working set of 2G belts and install them. It's pretty much a drop-in with just a bit of trimming involved. They're also a good bit lighter than the Canadian belts.

This is pretty funny threads, I have a 92 talon in Toronto and having trouble with my seat belts also. I was going to go to the wreckers and replace them. If there is a better way then please share the wisdom. I like not having those electronic sliding seat belts like the Saturn cars, but agree they can be dangerous with lots of slack.
