1g non turbo idle problem

Alright so I have a 1g non turbo and it wont idle when cold. It wont sputter or anything when i hold some gas to it for a min but if i dont it just dies. Ive had this problem since ive owned the car.The idle surges once its warm and kinda sputs a lil. It never sputtered until i took off the breather box. I checked for vac leaks and everything and idk what it is. Ive unplugged the mas while idling and it seemed to struggle for life so does this mean its still good? thanks for any help
