(2014) I was looking for a new hobby and ended up finding this car just sitting in the weeds on someone's property. I asked the owner what his plans were for the car and let's just say things didn't look good for the cars future. The car was pretty beat up so the chances of making this car 'nice' again were slim to none. I've owned several 2g street cars but I never owned a 1g. In our area we have several tracks that race a Non-Turbo FWD class. I thought that seemed like a great idea! At first we gutted the car, bought a cheap roll cage, got the motor running and put the car on the track. WP_000673.jpg WP_000813.jpg WP_000819.jpg WP_000824.jpg WP_000851.jpg

(2014) After a short season with a stock engine I started looking for ways to get more power out of a na car that still weighed in at close to 2500 lbs. We made some upgrades to the original engine such as porting the OEM intake, HKS 272 cams,ARP head studs, block bored .20 over 2.3 Stoker kit with Eagle H beam rods, Wiseco 10:1 pistons, 100mm Eagle crank, balance shaft delete and egr delete. I also went with a better roll cage that would stiffen the car up but also allow me to remove weight in other places.IMG_20140501_200338 (1).jpg IMG_20140526_142203 (1).jpg

IMG_252760156712164 (1).jpeg (2015) We switched to a 2g head with a mild port job, HKS 272 cams, Brian Crowler valve train with 1mm oversized valves. OEM 2g intake reflanged to fit a 70mm throttle body. Previous years 100mm Eagle crank, Eagle 150mm rods and new Wiseco 12:1 pistons.

For the 2016 season we added an evo 3 intake ported and honed for the 70mm throttle body. Most of the previous years engine was salvageable so only minor upgrades were made and the money was spent on other areas on the car. The pistons were upgraded to Wiseco 13:1 and a lighter OEM rod was used to reduce rotating weight. With the extra resources we upgraded the ecu with Ecmlink V3 and fabbed up a sheet metal body from the doors back. Total weight on the car now is 1950lbs with me in it. Plans for 2017 are to go with a 2.4 block, The head is off a 4g92 for added compression. I'll be ordering a set of custom cut high compression pistons from Wiseco and looking into having the crank knife edged. We'll be using a set of Brian Crowler 280 cams with adjustable gears. We will also use the valve train from previous years with new stainless valves. (Pictures coming soon)

I love this. I ran a cavalier a couple of years at a local dirt track and I've always wanted to run a 1g. The cars are so rare up here in upper michigan I'm very lucky to have my turbo AWD. You are living my dream my friend. I am forever envious

I'd really like to know what kind of power you were getting from the 2.0l with bolt'on.
Best bang for your buck would be a decent set of cams... thats where i noticed the biggest difference on a stock engine.

Did you ever end up dynoing it? Im curious to know if you made it to the 250hp barrier.....im thinking it'd make for a very fun miata swap or even seeing what a 1g would feel like.
Hoping to have it back together and on a dyno around mid April

Very nice work. Nice to see others preserving the competitive spirit of the DSM platform!

Thanks man! I appreciate it, the class I run in is growing, we have several 1g's a few 2g's and even a 3g that run locally. These cars seem to do pretty well!

The car is back together and made it to the dyno... with the changes made over the winter we've increased the hp 70% over a stock na engine. Tuning was done by Jp Riccio out of Independence Ohio (coltboostin) on here. I highly recommend Jp to anybody looking to find extra power in their builds.

I was thinking 1900ish, so light. Your weight and hp numbers aren't too far off from a lotus Elise and yours is on dirt. The dirt track takes me back to my childhood when my MOM raced factory stock at the local track in the early 80's. Thanks for the trip back to a better time and place. :thumb::thumb:
