I was putting the transfer case back into my 91 TSI and I noticed the axle mount that attaches to the block was hanging off. When I tried tightening it the bolt almost seemed too short and it wouldn’t grab the thread in the hole. Is this a common complaint? Also does anyone know what size bolt that is so I can try and get a slightly longer one?

Update I believed this is a M10x41.5 bolt?
 
I don’t think so, there’s only the intermediate shaft bracket as far as I can see
So hold it up where it’s suppose to bolt up to the block and see if there’s a gap between the bracket and block on the left side.
 
There are two bolts: are they both like this? If the bracket is tight to the block and you can insert the bolt up to its head without the threads engaging, sounds like the wrong bolt. I will say that in the two or three times I have had this part out, it always seems difficult to get the threads to start. Something about the angle of the bracket perhaps. But mine always has the head off the bracket face like 5mm, or whatever the normal engagement depth is. Mine has a.c. Bracket also. Parts catalog says 10x41.5

That's why you should use pilot point bolts there to avoid cross threading. Many people break those bolts because of this. The factory bolt is a pilot point bolt, not just like a normal bolt.

Yes, very true. As long as the receiving threaded hole has enough depth to accept the extra length of the pilot end. Starting them by fingers-only is also good practice, assuming you can reach to where the bolt goes in. I find on my eclipse there are many fasteners that can only be accessed with a socket on extension. Almost none like that on my Dodge. ;)
