I have a 1995 eclipse gsx that I am having rear axle/differential trouble. I bought a new axle clip from a mitsubishi dealer and it is much smaller than the original and wouldnt hold the axle in. I checked the part # online and it confirms it is the right part for my year car. My question is are 1g rear axles larger than 2g rear axles? or why is the axle clip so much smaller?

Are you refering to the ring clip that goes around the splines of the axle? If so they are different sizes from one side to the other. Also I believe having a LSD rear end makes a difference.
