Resolved 1g AWD rear wheel bearing noise???

So I've had this grinding/whirring type noise on decel since I purchased the car two years ago. It's only on decel in gear and when I press the clutch in or pull it out of gear, the noise goes away. I've rebuilt the driveshaft, there was no metal out of the norm when I drained the trans, tcase and rear diff. It's definitely speed related. It does have a stage 3 shep trans with welded diff. Almost certain it's coming from the rear and it has gotten progressively worse. Before it would only be at 60ish mph, and now it's also at 30-40mph. I'm suspecting it's the rear wheel bearings. What are your thoughts? I'm going to check what happens when I'm turning to see if the noise changes. There's no side to side or top and bottom play in any wheels.

Also, do you have to replace the seals? I watch joe wrenches video and it doesn't seem like he replaced any seals.

That’s what I originally thought so I replaced it. Same thing.

Hey Tony, if it was a rear wheel baring it would be consistent through out acceleration and deceleration. Also if you were to sway the car from left to right at higher speeds (ie:40-50mph+) the baring noise would change pitch very distinctively. sounds like a pinion gear baring in the differential is damaged and causing this issue.

Hey Joe. Thanks for the input. I changed the rear diff and it’s hard to image both diffs would create the same noise.

I’m sure the rear bearings are originally and they’re not difficult to replace and they’re fairly inexpensive. So I’m gonna change them sometime this winter and report back.

Word so you swapped diffs nice. how old are the cv shafts, id check those too?
and you said you rebuilt you drive shaft right>? where did you go for carrier bearings and u-joints and how much did it run you?

Carrier bearings from extreme psi and all the rest from amayama. All oem. Total was $420 I think

Thats awesome! ive been searching Amazon and Rockauto for parts and couldnt find OEM. Thats a great price for all of it. new propeller shafts are running over $1,000 - $1400. thanks for the info dude.

It takes a few weeks to ship since it comes from Japan. Also order the full yoke kit since it’s cheaper.

It was the inner wheel bearing. Looks like the seal came apart and moisture found its way in. The other side is still mint.

Anyone doing this will need the outer dust shield part# MB290428 & inner seal MB393807
