From what I have read, it seems that the AWD rear-ends tend to be noisy on decel, but I haven't read much about rebuilding them to help reduce this noise. Mine started to be a little more noticeable lately so I was thinking of just throwing some heavier gear oil in there to see if it helped at all. I would like to pursue a more permanent fix however.

Does anyone other than Satan sell a rebuild kit for the rear-end?
Are the joints on the driveshaft a common culprit for drivetrain noise?

I have the same noise. I replaced the rear u-joint (that was bad) and it still made noise. So I found a used diff with 35,000 miles, and put that one in and now its making a lot of noise. I think it has to do with the tranny wearing out and causing lots of play back there. I even took my original diff(with about 140,000 miles on it) to a shop and he said that the gear pattern was excellent and that he couldn't even get it that close when he rebuilt other diffs...
I don't think there is much heavier oil than the 95W thats in there. But I'm not sure.

Is it generally true for most DSMs then that most of the noise comes from the tranny/t-case and driveshaft, and very little comes from the diff?

The Noises from my rear end Drive Me CRAZY. There Is a Ping in Reverse while turning,
a whirring from shifting to a high gear at a low speed, and a Constant Hiss at any speed.

Ive almost given up tracking any of them down...

center bearings can cause noise. Mine make a weird noise on decel. If you look at them, they are all dry rotted and have alot of play. Mine dont know...yet (knock on wood) .. but id say replace the center bearings, and maybe your diff fluid. I put royal purple synthetic gear lube in mine. Cant say it made any differance.. but thats whats in there.

my '92 talon right before i bought it would make a noise that came from the rear end on acceleration. it turned out that the bushings connecting the driveshaft to the rear end had gone bad.

fix: replaced the driveshaft with a new one and that solved it.

have you checked your driveshaft bushings?

Also known as center bearings, or also known as carrier bearings. http://machv.com/1gdrivcarbea.html
