I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GST. My power steering belt is squealing.

Long story short, some oil got on it, a mechanic cleaned it off, then new belt started squealing. I took it back. Tech cranked on it, so much that when I started the car, after hours pickup, that I was afraid to drive it, so we came back in the morning to address. They "fixed" it, but they didn't replace the belt, which is likely stretched out now.

I was looking at the pulley, and it is bent at the back end, which is likely why it is squealing. I have had so many mechanics screw things up on my car in the last year. A friend and I are going to replace the belt and pulley, but I can't seem to find a pulley! Any suggestions? I've looked at the junkyards, as well as parts stores locally and online.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. So frustrated! It's been such a good car for the 10+ years that I have owned it. To be honest, I have a bit of an emotional attachment to it, as it was the vehicle that my deceased husband and I bought and enjoyed. It's my newest vehicle, as I don't like or want a newer vehicle...don't ask...LOL! Thank you. Blessings!

Welcome! You came to the right place to get some solid advice for the DSM platform. It's a good idea to start a new thread for visibility, but I'll try to answer here.

Post a wanted ad here in the classifieds and you may just find what you're looking for. Otherwise, you might be able to find a reman pump at places like Rock Auto, which will include a pulley (you might have to transfer a couple parts over from the old pump). I'm assuming you mean the pulley on the PS pump, not the water pump pulley.

It's unfortunate, but I wouldn't trust any old shop today to do anything but tires on my DSM. These cars are like unicorns and most commercial shops don't know or care how to work on them. Sounds like you're learning this the hard, expensive way.

Good on you for maintaining older vehicles. Nothing wrong with that and you're not alone. My oldest is a '77 and newest is an '06.

Unfortunately, it looks like I’m a probationary member or something, and it won’t let me make a new thread for some reason. Not sure why. Yes, it’s the power steering pulley. From what I can tell, the pumps don’t come with the pulley. Not sure what to do. I’ve done a lot of good maintenance to my car over the last year. It’s been such a good car. It’s the 3rd one that I have owned. I’m only the second owner, and I have had it for 10 years. It only has around 134,000 miles on it. You are right though about people not knowing how to work on it, but it has also been a lot of hack jobs. Thank you for responding! Blessings!

I think I just figured out how to post on Classifieds…HOORAY!
