1997 EVO 4 water pump help!! 4g63t

hey i just set up a deal to buy a 1997 lancer evo 4...the only problem is that it needs a waterpump...im having a panic attack trying to figure out exactly how to put it on because ive heard that the timing belt dosnt nessasarily need to be removed however just clamped down to make sure the notches arnt disturbed, loosened and the water pump replaced...now is this true or just a bunch of wishful thinking i would really appreciate if any one could give me a more detailed step by step to do this maybe even with pics ....thanks guys il upload pics soon shes a beauty.

The timing belt (TB) must be removed on the dsm 2g 4g63t engine so I assume it must on the Lancer also. You could clamp it on all the sprockets but you still will have the tensioner pulley and tensioner in the way anyway so you'll have to remove them so you may as well remove the TB too. Look at the picture at the end of this: Timing Belt VFAQ.

I believe the Evo4 was the first year that the engine was flipped 180*. Have you joined any of the Evo forums also?

thanks for that...i saw that link and it kinda looks as if i were to loosen the tensioner pulley i could get that last bold up behind it and take off the pump...i had no idea the 4g63t was so diverse :s.

Yeah i think your right a friend of mine bought an evo 3 and his entire belt set up is on the right even tho they are supposed to be the same engine technically....and to be honest im a japanese car noob and i never got into forums until now .
