before anyone asks, yes i did search.. and i came up with all types of conflicting information.

i recently purchased a 1990 fwd laser rs turbo.. and it's doing things that none of the dsm gurus around here understand.

the previous owner had replaced the ecu in the car due to leaky capacitors - the car would not go over 2000 rpm with that faulty ecu in it. the part number of the ecu was MD145903 and is listed on vfaq as a 1990 awd ecu.

the ecu he had replaced it with a MD128625 which is listed on vfaq as a 'HIGH LINE' fwd ecu but it seems nobody knows the year its for... and that is the ecu that is currently installed the car that is giving me problems.

with the 'high line' ecu installed in the car it runs great.. drives line any normal car and all accessories function properly.. but when the key is turned to the off position the car stays running.. everything else turns off (headlights, radio, seat belts go to 'exit' position) but the engine stays running.. and it runs smooth and i could drive it around if the steering was not locked. it's a mystery to me.

just for giggles i put the 1990 awd ecu into the car and the car turns on and off properly? figure that one out.. but the ecu reeks of fish... and shows signs of leaking capacitors.. and does not steadily go over ~2000 rpm so i took that ecu back out of the car.

now.. today i got a hold of a friend who owns a 1990 laser rs turbo and i borrowed his ecu.. it seems he has this 'high line' ecu also... and i threw the ecu into the car... and you guessed it... it doesn't turn off! what the hell is going on here? i cant even find anyone that has had the same problem as me.

i do not believe there is a problem with the ignition or tumbler because the car turns on and off properly with the awd ecu installed. anyone have any ideas?

there is no turbo timer installed... the ecu harness does not seem to have been altered with.. and there seem to be no other electrical problems with the car... does anyone have an idea?

thanks in advance!

the ecu is out of a 90,i looked it up on a ecu part number site.its out of a fwd, just like you said.if i were you,id just fix the awd ecu, since it works.other than that,id say its an ignition problem, since your friends car doesnt act up with his ecu.
