im in the process of buying a 1990 eclipse gst....the tranny and motor have 66k on it...but it grinds 2nd and 3rd gear, when shifting slow, not quick....are these known problems for this tranny....or could it be sumthin simple to fix

I recently purchased my 1990 Eclipse GST, it grinds(ed) 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear when shifting straight to first instead of going second to first, shifting quickly into second, and when pushing it, into third. I changed the master and slave cylinders and threw in some thicker tranny oil, which helped a whole lot. I just this past weekend replaced the clutch with a performance clutch, and we just got the transmission back on tonight, which is why the (ed) is by grinds. Hopefully it will be all better by the time I get it back on the road. Grinding is typical with our transmissions. If you are going to start buying stuff to try and correct it, start with the cheapest and work your way up. Good luck with the fix! :thumb:

First things first, thicker gear lubricant, goes for $4 per 1 liter bottle at Autozone.
Next would be slave and master cylinders, which I got discounted for $85 combined.
Last would be the clutch, and seeing as how you have a turbo and would probably like to end up modifying it, a performance clutch would be in order. I got the SouthBend Clutch TZ Kit, which is comparable to the ACT 2100 I believe, straight from the shop for $285. I believe it can be ordered for $295 not including s/h.
I did all the work myself with help from friends so no labor costs. Best of luck to you.
