Hi guys, I have a quick question about some rims I am interested in. I have a chance to get some Kosei K1 Ts Rims that are 18x8 with a 30mm offset for pretty cheap. They weigh in at 16.8lbs and they would replace my pig 18" Motegi Mr7's which weigh 27 lbs WTF. My question is, with this 18x8 +30mm offset, what size tire and what kind of drop can I have on the car, if any at all. I know there was a member who ran some 18x8.5 5zigen rims with 235/40/18 tires and he did so with no rubbing. My car is a 1997 Eclipse Gst and I just want to know some suggestions for tire size and inches in drop. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Well, you should already have a good idea how much clearance you'll have, since you already have 18's on there. Check all your current clearances, and you decide how much you can drop the car or widen the tires. 235/40 sounds right, but you be the judge, how much bigger are those over what you're currently running?

I'm running 18x 8.5 +44 with a 235/40 tire and slightly rub in the rear with no fender rolling. Your new wheel specs will stick out about 8mm more than mine. Look at my gallery for pics. Depending on your ride height and suspension travel, I'd suspect you would have to roll your rear fender lips.

Give me your current wheel offset and I'll tell you how much more it will stick out.

Should fit pretty easily, but expect to roll your fenders if you're going to lower your car at all. I'd get a slightly higher offset if its available.

Thanks for the help guys. Right now I have 18x7.5 rims and they are wrapped on 215/40/18 and I have a good amount of clearance at least in the front, I haven't checked the back lately. I guess the best way would be to try to put them on and check it out.

Sorry I forgot to add that I think the offset is around 42mm.

Then the wheels that you are looking at (18x8 +30) will stick out about 18mm more than whats on there now. Also, this is just the wheel itself, not the tire; so keep that in mind.

Here is a few pics of 18x8 +30 (245/40/18) offset on a 2g. The wheels are off my evo and are Rota p1's. From my experience a 8.5 wide wheel with a +40 or +42 is almost perfectly flush on a 2g.

I know what the 18x8 is (diameter x width). What do you mean by the +30??

And with "(245/40/18)" I know the "18" is the diameter but what are the first 2 specs? (The "245" and the "40")

I search these things in google and only get tires for sale haha

+30 is the offset. It's how far the hub part of the wheel is from center.
245 is the width of the tire in mm.
40 is the sidewall height as a % of the tire width (so 245/40 has a 245*40% = 98mm sidewall.)

take a 245/40/R17.

--first number--
The 245 indicates this tire is 245 millimeters across from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when mounted and measured on a specified width wheel. This measurement is also referred to as the tire's section width. Because many people think of measurements in inches, the 245mm can be converted to inches by dividing the section width in millimeters by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch).

245mm / 25.4 = 9.6"

--second number--
The 40 indicates that this tire size's sidewall height (from rim to tread) is 40% of its section width. The measurement is the tire's section height, and also referred to as the tire's series, profile or aspect ratio. The higher the number, the taller the sidewall; the lower the number, the lower the sidewall. We know that this tire size's section width is 245mm and that its section height is 40% of 245mm. By converting the 245mm to inches (245 / 25.4 = 9.6") and multiplying it by 40% (.40) we confirm that this tire size results in a tire section height of 3.85".

you still with me? :aha: what it comes down to is that the first number is the width and the second number is the heighth of the sidewall (low profile) on the tire.

:dsm:

The first number is not the same as the section width. It's just the typical advertised tire width. For example, the Star Specs I'm looking into are advertised to be 245's, but the actual section width is 248.x as per the company's website. You should always refer to the manufacturer's website when purchasing tires, especially if you think they might be a tight fit.

that is true. if you think its going to be a tight fit check the manufacturers website... my bridgestone potenza RE760's 245/40/R17s are really 248.99/40/R17's which is almost 4mm of rubber unaccounted for. :sneaky:

for a basic understanding of tire sizes though i think its fairly accurate to say that the first number is the tires section width.

Not quite. The section width / advertised width is not the distance between the beads, but the width of the widest part of the tire.

Grn95gst, Thanks so much for the pics. It does not look too bad actually. Is your car on stock ride height? Did you experience any rubbing?

Those pictures are with stock springs. The front sits higher due to lack of engine at the time being. I just put them on to see how they fit then took them off.

My buddy has some 18x8.5 +38 evo x wheels on his car. They stick out a bit less and he only rubs on hard bumps. He has Sprint springs I think, 1.7" drop.

What would the offset have to be to put 18"x9" in the back & 18"x8.5(or7.5)" in the front?...Yes, they are deep lip rims.

I searched this website by car make and model (defining what wheels fit our cars) and these popped up: http://www.victoriatire.com/wheel_XXR_962 GUN METAL_MITSUBISHI_ECLIPSE 89-98_18_18

Now one of them is 18"x9"...I'm assuming those are only good for the rear? If not, it would look sweet to have those 9" in the back and the 7.5 or 8.5 in the front. I think the rear looks better with a deeper lip than the front!

(And look the the "package deal" at the bottom.... "Sunny tires"?? What is that a knock-off FireStone ROFL)

I know that website is a little expensive... Its just a reference.

So now I am wondering how much would I be able to drop the car with these rims. I will most likely go with a 235/40/18 tires or a 245/40/18 tires. I was hoping for about a 1 inch drop. My front fenders are rolled. Which springs do you guys suggest?

So your evo rims have 245/40/17? or 245/45/17? thanks
