I bought a turbine housing off of ebay to replace my stock one because it has alot of stripped threads. When I received my housing i noticed a few major differences. First of all on the matting surface between the turbine housing and CHRA there is no alignment dowl so the housing can rotate untill clamped down. Do I need to have one installed or will I be ok without one? Second is the gap between the sides of the housing are smaller on the ebay housing. Should I have it machined to match the old one? What are the efects of this smaller gap?

i would hold it together and make sure the fan doesnt tough the housing, that would be my main issue with the size difference but i not all knowing.

I dont know if it will make an issue or not then.

Many people, myself not included, have used these housings without issue. Where the alignment is concerned, put the turbo on the housing and get it close to the proper position. Put the band clamp on just snug enough so that you can rotate the center section within the turbine housing, but the housing and center section cant come away from each other. Bolt the turbo to the exhaust manifold and the manifold to the head. Now, what you have to do is have the oil return line bolted to the pan, and rotate the turbo so that you can bolt the oil return line to it. The flanges MUST be square with each other, and you should be able to hand tighten the two return line bolts using a 1/4 drive extension and 10mm socket with LITTLE effort, if not, rotate the turbo slightly until you can hand turn the bolts or you will strip them. Once the return line is bolted down, you may tighten the band clamp fully now that the turbo is in the proper position. Hope that helps. :thumb:

I ran one on my 14b with no issues. Just make sure you get the wasteate flapper bushing tacked in place before you put it on. Otherwise the flapper will move and open the wastegate, making your turbo laggy as fuggg.

I'll drill the eBay housings I install for the locating pin because it won't allow the housing to rotate should the v-band come loose. I'm probably anal for doing so, but I strive to make fitment as close to OEM as possible.

Otherwise, the fitment and performance is fine. You'll have to drill the end of your wastegate actuator a little.

Yea the flapper is way off from factory I'm going to have to re bend the actuator arm or drill the flapper arm off and lower it down. Does the small gap around the turbine blade cause any ill-effects?

What do you use for the pin? I'm pretty anal myself.

Went to put the housing on my car today and ran into another problem. The bolt patern is spaced right for the o2 housing but it is roatated so it doesn't line up correctly be sending it in for a new one tomorrow.

Yeah well it's one thing if the turbo doesn't perform properly or have the same reliability....but when fitment is no longer on the table, that means they're destined for the scrap pile from the moment a Chinamen puts it into the box.

Haha and all this time I thought Asians made great machinists. Well at least not the kids working in China.

Seems like a similar issue Paul had recently:

Quality control is either in the shitter, or the quality of the turbine housings is actually getting worse than a few years ago.

Funny you mention that. I recently purchased a stainless steel O2 housing off ebay and was disappointed to find that the flange on the O2 housing was way off from the turbo, just like the above picture. On the small chance it would work, I pulled an old turbine housing I had tossed in a pile under my desk out and they met perfect. So I swapped turbine housing on my 16g turbo and now its sitting pretty. I'm just gonna have to go back and double check the clocking of the center cartridge(thanks for reminding me) once I get the motor back in.... or maybe i'll do it on the stand before i get it in the car...

I guess people dealing with this sort of crap is why people get sooo gunshy about turbos. Most of what gets sold on ebay is the REJECTED CRAP made by these smallish factories in asia. The issues are random and varied, but there are always some issues. These people didnt make these parts to sell on ebay, they made them for a company that rejected them, and after they were returned rejected, they get put on ebay by the cousin of the factory manager who lives in San Fransico or something like that. (ok I just made that up but you get my point)

I guess people expect some trouble when they buy this stuff on ebay and thats why they dont get very upset about it.

ON TOPIC: you want a pin so that your actuator never gets misaligned during operation if the housing shifts.

recieved a replacement for my replacment today and let me tell you the machinist must have been on crack :ohdamn:
my suggestion is if you buy an ebay housing be prepared for a bad housing and maybe you'll get lucky and get a good one but I would try and buy OEM if you can afford it.

OMG. Thats worse than the other. I have to admit, I bought one of these for around $80 shipped about 3 years ago and the quality was good. No issues at all. If you want Ill look and see if I can find the sell for you.

So It's still a 1 out of 5 or ten, to get e good ebay turbo or turbine housing..Glad I got a good one..Well im still not sure I'm probably getting close to the 500 mile mark, without any problems other than a chipped compressor fin..It looks like it ate a rock or something but doesn't smoke, and theres no shaft play..

Well since this thread as well as Paul's in the part feedback forum I've began looking at each and every Chinese turbine housing that comes to my shop on customer turbos....and every one looks pretty damn nice in comparison to the examples found in these threads. I'm drawing the conclusion that the seller is indeed moving blem housings from China.

Maybe there getting cheaper as the years go on then like you said in post 10..I don't know what year mine came from..But I'm going to guess it's at least 2 years old..Because mine has the little allignment dowel, but poor WG arm, compared to an MHI turbo I have..
