I jumped and bought a 16G compressor wheel on ebay because the auction was about to end and I didn't have time to do my homework first. What I'm trying to do is put a 16G compressor side on the stock TD04 in my WRX, but now I'm not entirely sure what I have or what housing I need. The listing says "It comes from a TD05H-16G Subaru turbocharger." But Subaru doesn't make a 16G -- so I'm guessing they took it off the Mitsu turbo that had flanges for a Subaru.

This is the wheel I bought:

The shop I talked to told me instead of getting a 16G compressor housing, they'd machine my stock housing to fit the wheel. I'd like to try fitting the real 16G housing myself first though. ...but I didn't look first and realize there are big and normal 16G compressor sides. Can anyone tell me what wheel I actually have here? Also, if someone has the housing/blown/cheap turbo for this wheel and wants to get rid of it, I'd be interested in that, too. Lastly, could recommend a shop to do the work if it doesn't work out? The whole point of this little frankenstein project is to upgrade my turbo cheaply, so if it's going to cost more I'll just go ahead and buy something else.

Thanks!

"turbo upgrades" and "cheap" don't go together. You are probably going to end up with a smoking pile of parts unless you take it all to a professional shop and let them do the work. You should probably contact Forced Performance, they have the turbo on their website.

My intent is to do as much of the work as I can myself. I don't want to pay someone to rebuild my turbo, or to machine my housing if a 16G will fit. I will of course take the shaft to have it balanced and anything else I can't do myself. I'm just entertaining some ideas here and if it turns out I'll be better off buying a different turbo, so be it.

It looks like a big 16G, but that's just a guess. My avatar is a Evo III B16G, but you can't really tell. If I remember correctly, Mitsu turbos vary by the letter (14B, 16B, etc.). The "G" series are double round blades, so it could be anything. I'm just guessing....

Well the only way to tell is to get a caliper and take measurements on the inducer & exducer. The small & big 16g series wheels physically look the same. From the auction they rate the flow as 520 cfm, which is strange as the small 16g is 500 cfm & the big is 550.

I see the upgraded subaru turbos use a mitsu center section, so the factory ones do as well? (was going to ask how you are going to mate the two till I took a look at some subaru turbo upgrades)

Here are some specs when you take measurements:

Subaru did have at one time a TD05H-16G that came on the car from the factory. The factory compressor covers have a casted 90 degree elbow on the inlet. I would really just think about getting the compressor cover recut for you compressor wheel. Also I would think about getting the turbine wheel at least clipped. That little TD04 turbine wheel that you have from the factory will really limit the exhaust flow if you just leave it alone.
