I'm looking into getting a fmic for my 1g. My exhaust side is flowing really good, so i figured i need to free up my intake side. I want to get a 2g mas and hard pipe along with a fmic setup. I found a pretty good deal on a spearco intercooler with pipes, but im wondering how it will work with my stock 14b turbo. I eventually plan on upgrading to a 16g or 20g in the future, but that won't be until the summer or spring. The core size is 28" x 10" x 3.5". What kind of pressure drop am i looking at here? Do you think it is worth the performance benefits?

Yeah, I'm running a 14b with a FMIC. That one you speak of sounds a little too big. How much are you paying for it? It's worth it. If you're upgrading to a 16g or 20g, then you'll need it anyway. It's just one less thing you'll have to buy then. You shouldn't have any pressure drop problems... I would recommend a little smaller core though..... :thumb:

wow dude, i wouldn't go with a 28"... especially for the 14b, i would say at THE biggest a 24"... my buddies got a frank 3 with a 24" on it, let alone a 28 on a 14b.

I would go a little smaller, but if your going to upgrade in the future anyway, why don't you just wait?

So what would happen if i slap a really big fmic on a dinky turbo like the 14b? Would i still gain performance or would it hurt my power instead? This is a really good deal so i just want to know. thanks for the quick responses guys.

dont listen to them if you going to upgrade to a 16g or better go with it, youll be happy you did, even if you do lose some performance now!

Get whatever IC you want.. as long as you plan on upgrading later, and you get a good deal!! :D The IC could introduce lag depending on your piping, but its negligable. Just keep in mind your goals, and size the IC accoordingly

what he said :dsm:

i have a 14b and i am running the dejon tool racing fmic which is huge and the car feels better than when i was on the sidemount.

So i have a chance to get this ridiculously huge spearco intercooler with all the piping and a blow off valve for $450. Do you think i should buy even though its going to be on a 14b until next summer? I'm sure it will help out a little right now with a few negative effects, but i think it would be worth it in the end when i go to a bigger turbo. Would i have to cut the bumper to fit this 10" (height) intercooler on my 1g?

dude, i would NOT suggest a 14b and front mount of any sort. you will lose sooo much CFM it wouldnt even be funny. yea, your intake temp would be cooler, but think about how much that relatively tiny 14b is going to have to push to get pressure through all of that. the MOST on a 14b i would suggest is a supra sidemount as i have and am currently running a ported evo III 16G, but with a supra sidemount you cant go much bigger than that or else you will heatsoak alot.

I've been researching a lot about intercooler sizes, flowrates, ect. and I realize that this core is just way to big for my setup now and in the future. I'll probably just buy my own core and fab my own pipes, unless i find another good deal on a complete setup. I was thinking of a core close to 24 by 7 by 3 (possibly one of JR's intercoolers), this wouldn't be too big for my 14b and it would be about right for a 16g or 20g turbo.

River-I've heard of plenty of people with fmic on 14b's and they all seem to like it.

This sounds much better. My Slowboy is 24x12x3 and they claim enough flow for 750HP. But that Spearco is only $450?? I would probably get it just because it's such a good deal. Either way, 14B + FMIC = good. You shouldn't have any problems. I ran a GReddy big FMIC on a T25 and I didnt have any problems. And my current 14B on my Slowboy FMIC is working great. Either way, good luck. :thumb:

ok im wondering the same shit as this guy...so no 28 on my 14b? s what if i got a 16g then i bought a 24...would that be okay or would i need a bigger fmic after that???????????

Any FMIC that is roughly 20"+ will support any power made by a 16G.....
Like I said a SBR FMIC is 24x12x3 and they claim it's good for 750 HP.
You will almost never need bigger than a 24". Trust me, it's big enough. If you get too long or too tall, that's just more you have to cut away to get it to fit. And if you get too thick, thats that much less air getting to your radiator......

I preferably like Victory performance fmic there a little expensive but the styling and performance are worth it in my opinion

A friend of mine has a frontmount (pretty big one, prep for T3/T4) with the stock 14b, GM mas, yadda yadda. Just walked an STi, twice. I would say it works quite well.

i'm runnin 14b with a decent size intercooler. Works good. I cant wait to ditch that little snail for something no smaller then a 50 trim. Dont even waste your money on a 16g or 20g, your car can handle a much bigger turbo with ease.

Another comment on the 14b/fmic setup: My car is very hard to tune. I'm wondering if im overboosting the 14b and somehow causing knock. I've been trying to run 20psi and sometimes it knocks, sometimes it doesn't. weird.

Had a similar condition on my buddy's car and mine. He said he re-adjusted his base timing and it cleared it up, so that's my next thing to try.
