Tried to look for a similar thread but didn't really find what I need. Was looking at the diagrams on a 1990 1g. ISC has 6 wires 2 power and ,4 grounds controlled by ECU . There isn't however any reference wires that give feedback back to the ECU. What is the theory of operation?

Im assuming that instead of a regular DC motor, ISC is more like a stepper motor. Where the ECU cycles the ground a whole bunch of times to get it's preferred position Based on the inputs from MAF, TPS and ECT - ECU blindly adjust the position of the valve based on a factory programed sequence?

Or is it more like a servo motor? Where the ECU controls still have the same inputs but the ECU knows the exact location of the valve based on internal resistance of each pin, or maybe it breaks the ground and stops cycling the motor, once the draw value changes? This would notify the ECU the exact location of the valve. To me this is less likely for early 90s, but I'm not deep into circuitry and controls. Because the metered airflow shouldn't really change with the air bypassing throttle body, it's still gonna read the same value. Im assuming it would use MAF to verify ISC position. And I don't think that in closed loop the computer would read AF ratio to check IAC position

Reason why I'm asking is because the ISC can have 30 ohms of resistance on every position. But that wouldn't verify that it can freely move, or the plastic valve isn't broken/binding around the threads on the rod that controls it.

If I provide the 12v and ground to one of the position pins, Would it just click and not rotate like a regular DC motor? Would i have to know the sequence on how the ECU cycles the ground to extend it or retract it? Or once I give it 12v and ground off one of the position pins it would just freely move to a desired position till it bottoms out or something?

How would I know if the ECU is bad going crazy cycling the ISC or the ISC is just binding and never reaches it's desired position? Would the computer just cycle the valve non-stop if it got stuck, or would it fire a pre programed sequence and assume that the valve is doing it's job, until it sees that the airflow is all out of wack?

Who knows the whole theory of operation? I would be interested to find out.
 
There’s a whole section on how the ISC motor works in the 1990 Technical Information Manual, starting at page 14-44.
Wow...I have that manual and never even looked there. Im gonna go through it when I get home. I always wondered how the ECU gets reference from it in closed loop, without a reference/position wire

The only feedback is indirect, does the idle speed/airflow change as the ECU tries to move the pintle. You can usually tell if it's dead if the ECU drives it to 0 or the year dependent high limit. (I don't think it ever goes to 255)

I actually took apart my 1990 ISC, took the snap ring, removed the pintle entirely and made sure everything is working as it should, all resistance values are good. I connected it back and witnessed the ECU winding it backwards and then out a little, which I am sure normal....all tho when I let the car sit for a while with ignition On, especially after a minute or so after I let the car get close to operating temp, I do start hearing clicking from the ISC.....not sure what thats all about. Im just getting this car going again after it was sitting in a barn for over 12 years, caps in the ECU has been replaced on time ago, the driver for IC driver is not burned.. I'm sure I'll have to find a 91+ TV with a new ISC valve and TPS and rewire, but for now I'm just getting all the wiring fixed and maintenance. FIAV is deleted, Boss seal is also new


I do have a problem that I can't figure out tho... Im horrible with all this computer stuff...I can't find the ISC position in any captured or available values etc ... I would like to see what it's doing on live data....just can't find a way to put it on the screen. It's a v3 link. Im sure once I have it showing values on the screen I can figure out exactly what's happening, but so far I got the car to run smoothly only after it warms up to at least 140f and idle is at 1300.

Yes ..that's the one. I can't find it in any of the available values to select.... Not in displayed, captured, raw.... I was hoping someone here can tell me. Or I got my son with me tomorrow, maybe he can figure it out, like I said I don't get along with computers that well.... Im still stuck in the floppy disc era, I guess

Yes...I've been going through that screen before and I don't see it there. But you know what tho, Ive been out of the DSM game for a very long time, I had 4 1Gs and don't even remember if this one had the v3 or v2 . Would you know how to verify? I got a picture, this is what it looks like

At the top right of the captured values screen, if you’re connected to the ECU, I would think it would display the version you’re running. I’m sure there’s other ways but without pulling it open again, that’s what I’ve got right now. 😅

You have v3.
Another way to tell is a USB-A cable vs old school DB9.
 
I gotta take a look when I get home ..I'm 90% sure it's a v3, I was running a GM MAF I also had MAP sensor on the intake, so speed density as well. From what I remember on the v2 we didn't have speed density option, I could be wrong.

For now I just fixed all the main ignition wiring and had to put factory 1g MAF, cause I can't save the adapter harness for the GM MAF that ECMTuning provided, critters completely destroyed it. I got the car to run also had to use factory injectors, cause I'm waiting for the injector screens to arrive so I can flow and clean my RC injectors. But one thing that I've noticed is that MAF is way different that MAFraw, I gotta figure out what's going on there as well. I'm gonna see if I can add a video

Here is the video, hope I did it right. Also the vacuum reading are all out of wack. It's running between -10 to -15 hg at idle. I checked that the intake is sealed and but haven't had time to check if there is a loss at brake booster. I'll do that later tomorrow probably
