I just put in a new Mishimoto M-line FMIC. Some say I downgraded. Based on what I’ve read it seems like the correct choice. What’s the opinion of our experienced DSM’ers.

You're the guy here with both, so let us know :)

I have seen cars pick up nice power from just switching to legit cores, but they are expensive.
Honestly I’m not going to be able to compare the two. This car hasn’t really been drove with the old FMIC. It’s been sidelined basically since I got the old FMIC installed. Between fixing overheating issues and then switching to speed density it hasn’t seen much driving. I’m still working out the kinks in the SD tune.

Is that bar that your fmic is mounted to oem, or aftermarket? the one on my talon tsi is different, which im not sure if thats a normal vairiation between the eagle 2g and mitubishi 2g. I am also looking to upgrade my fmic but the bar being the way it is kinda limits me, unless I were to start cutting, which I DONT want to do

That bar is from the CXRacing (and similar) intercooler kit. The stock crash bar gets removed

It's hard to go off of just a single photo, but the old intercooler looks to be a much more efficient design. The fins are much smaller and denser, which means better heat transfer and more efficient cooling. The Mishimoto most likely just uses a generic cheap core that I'm sure does the job, but just not as well.

It would be interesting to see IAT logs between the two in similar conditions.

Personally I think the Treadstone cores are some of the best bang for the buck, sure the Garret cores are better but they also cost a lot more and restrict a lot more airflow to the cooling system. I did a direct comparison before the Punishment Racing/CX Racing core vs the TR1045 back in 2018
