I've got a 92 laser with 189k on the body. Its non-turbo 2.0 automatic. I got the car for doing a brake job, so it was almost free! Anyway, I only drove it about two months (after doing a headgasket and waterpump) and the motor took a shit, so I went on ebay and bought a JDM long block and switched over my tranny from the old motor and slapped it in the car and fired it up and it ran beautifully. I backed out of the driveway and everything seemed fine. When I tried moving foward, it seemed like the tranny was slipping. So, I double checked the fluid level, and it seemed ok. After driving a little more I determined that it seemed like it was starting in 2nd gear and staying in 2nd gear. Here are a few things to keep in mind...

-Before the motor swap, the tranny was fine.
-reverse works perfectly normal
-It looked like someone was working on the wiring cuz there are butt connectors all over the place
-I switched two plugs around (four pin) and when I shifted with the car off it made a wierd noise, and the car would not start. So, I switched them back and now the car still wont start. There seems to be no spark

I am guessing something in the wiring is messed up, which caused the ecu to keep the ignition from working, but I am hoping someone on here has had similar problems, and could give me some advice. I have a lot of experience with motors etc, but not auto trannys, so any and all help would be REALLY appreciated.

In my experience the auto transmissions have a neutral/park safety switch. Will not give 12volt signal to the solenoid if this circuit is not completed. So if it has something to do with the transmission wiring the car should not turn over at all. It may be something else. It could be anything from an ignition module/ignition coils/ecu/bad conection/broken wire. Its tricky. You have to test the whole system with a voltmeter till you find the problem. Are all 4 spark plugs not sparking? Anyway. I think thats the best I can do for now.

Thank you for responding.

I finally found the problem myself. After I had started the car and ran it, it wouldnt restart apparently because the CPS was out of adjustment. After I switched the plugs on the trans the first time, the car wouldn't start, so I thought that switching them caused something else to go bad. Little did I know that I had them right the second time, but the CPS was preventing it from starting. Once I switched the plugs back to how they were the very first time and adjusted the CPS, it ran, but still messed up trans. Then I switched the plugs AGAIN to the way I had them the second time (the time it wouldnt start because of the CPS) and everything was perfect again...Thank God

Once again, thank you HITNRUN for replying with some advice
