Well the question I have is, is it possible to cut the grooves out of the MWE on the compressor housing. They are there but its just solid as we know the H1C didnt have them cut for some reason. Is there any benefit of them being there open like the hx35s have. Has anyone ever attempted this. I have read several of the Holset threads but the 1000s and 1000s of post its sometimes hard to find what you are looking for. Thanks in advance.

They are anti surge ports that will release some of the pressure when the turbo is surging so it won't do as much damage to the compressor wheel/bearings as it would without the ports. they also add the trademark holset whitsle that everyone loves. I wouldn't imagine it being too hard to add the ports with a dremel or something but you would have to check it that would effect the inlet air flow to the compressor.

Yeah I googled it last night and I think that the question was brought up in a honda forum but with no answer. I thought someone on here with knowledge of these turbos might know as I am a noob to the Holset world. I mean they are there just was wondering if they would have any ill effects if they were ported out. I am sure that it wouldnt be hard but wouldnt want to ruin my new to me turbo. Any other thoughts on the subject.

dsmonster or jusmx with your knowledge of these holset turbos have you ever seen or heard of anyone doing this to their H1C.

Well from the lack of responses I would have to say that its either never been tried before or that its not possible. Just was wondering if there would be any significant benefit from doing such a mod.

I guess sell it and buy a HX35 if surge is that much of a problem. Adding the MWE groove will definitely slow the spool of the turbo down a bit because the function of the groove basically allows some of the intake air to bypass the inducer tips a bit.

Your other choice would be to track down a WH1C cover from a wastegated turbo which should already have the MWE groove.

Perfect... I was under the wrong assumption on the MWE groves as I did not know there full purpose just what people posted but I will run it as is and if it surges ill fix the issue somehow someway like others have.

Thanks Justin

The groove in the cover basically trades a bit of compressor efficiency for surge protection. Out of a few dozen H1C users that I know of, I've only ever heard of one complaint about surge for that particular turbo.

I know this is an old topic but my h1c surges like crazy in 3rd 4th and 5th. I also have a wh1c cover but the inducer is 2mm larger which won't work. I plan to cut the slot in mine based off of the slot in my wh1c cover. I also don't see how if this is done right, that the cutting of the slot would slow the spool more than what a stock hx35 would do(which is great). Also a guy on the cummins forums did it with great results.
