i posted it on here because i own a dsm and there is alot of people that know what there talking about. its the only thing i could think of

yeah i tryed telling him that, some reson he doesnt want a dsm

Ok well you could always register for a subie forum and post it there... but anyway, I would do the same thing for used car. Do a compression test, check for rust, drive it kind of hard, etc. There is likely to be less issues with a WRX then a DSM since it is newer though, but it's always good to check those things. As far as stuff specific to WRX's, I personally don't know of too many specific problems they are known for.

depends on which year for the turbos, wrx 02-07 are a tdo4, the 04-06 sti had the vf39 and the 07 had the vf43. want to watch out for mods, if its already modded make sure it was properly tuned. check for under carriage rust. and do a compression test. anything else?

WRX in as well as the Neon SRT-4 (Skittle) are designed for Rally Road Racing whereas our DSM's are more for drag.

Those two motors are good for the takeoff since they have bottom end torque, but run out of gas and steam when they get over 6Krpms since they're more stroke than bore. And for Rally, you need the shiftpoints real bad to keep in the torque range.

Ours are more designed to be close to square so they keep the torque in the higher RPM range .. which is good for the straight line track...and we would suck in a Rally Race (unless you stoked it up to the 2.4L for Rally)

..what makes a DSM fun to drive ... - DSM

avoid anything modded LOL. the performance shop i work at has seen many a blown up wrx and sti and only one is massively modded. most are untuned, and abused stage 2 cars.

rod knock on number 3 rod (the one right behind the turbo) the exissive heat seems to trasnfer from the turbo into the block.

Rebuilding the engine is pricey and a PITA

Hope he has some deep pockets.....

+1 for Bogus

My buddy works at a subie dealer and that is the biggest problem he has seen, number three cylinder. Both the rod and the rings from the excess heat of the turbo

sound of the boxer is amazing.
Eh, not so much.

Ever hear one of those junkers with aggressive cams? I think the word "horrible" is closer to describing the tone coming from the exhaust.

He wants Our opinions on this, not the Wrx owners opinions, sure this could have been in the hangout but, hes asking us to tell him what to look for in a wrx, so his friend doesnt get one with a rod knock like Ive seen countless times.

To help you out in my opinion:

They get rod knock when beat on unless you want to build the block up,

I dislike Boxer engines, If anything, a DSM with a 2.3 stroker is torque for rally.

Thats my thought.

i have both, and i love both. mostly because they are 2 totally different cars. my opinion, the only thing that beats the sound of a good exhaust on a subaru is a good exhaust on an american v8. do the normal inspections that you would do on any used car, rust, fluids, brakes, ect. ect.. look for the obvious external engine mods and ask if it has been tuned, most people tend not to mess with the internals on a subaru because it is a PITA to work on and the parts are a bit more expensive that DSM parts. if he has taken it to get it tuned find out where and see if you can get a hold of the person that tuned it. take it to a reputable mechanic and have them do an inspection on it (preferably a subaru dealer but any national name company should be fine, that way there is less of a chance they will blow smoke up your a$$) take it for a good hard test drive, if the person selling the car has any problems with you really getting on it hard then that might be a good indication of something is wrong (although your friend might really need to convince him he is serious about buying the car and not just taking it out for a spin). there are a couple of specifics that you can look for, I would get on North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club and through the stickies in the forum, there should be a pretty good “what to look for “ when looking at a used subaru. if you have any specific questions shoot me a PM......... one more thing tell your friend to try and spend the extra cash on the STI, the 6 speed transmission, better brakes, and the bigger engine are worth it.
