i was watching 4x4 xtreme on SPEED and they showed a turbo that uses the computer and slots to control turbo lag. the slots would open and close depending on engine speed, throttle position, etc to lessen the amount of time to reach full boost. i was just wondering if this type of turbo would work for our cars and if any already exist.

Sorry in advance for the vague description.

I saw that same thing and asked my buddy who knows quite a bit about turbo's. He told me that he would have to have seen the show to know exactly what I was talking about.

To fill in some more information, the turbo was made by Banks Motorsports and going on a large turbo diesel truck. It has something called variable something or another and the turbo had veins inside the exhaust housing that opened and closed on commad from a computer. That was supposed to decrease the boost lag of the turbo while still giving it an ass load of top end once the truck got rolling. I am guessing that turbo was very expensive, but it would be pretty awesome if a DSM vendor somehow made something like that. It would solve a lot of problems with turbo lag for the guys with really large turbo's.

I am sorry I was so vague with my description as well, but that is all I know and I was just trying to add on to the previous post.

i didnt see the show but i know what u r talking about.
im not sure what it is called but it is in maximum boost the book.
the viens do as u say, open and close as told by the computer.
this is VERY expensive

the newer VW turbo diesels (beetles, jetta, golf, passat ect..) use the same technology. they have adjustable vains that move accordingly to speed and is somehow controlled by the ecu. pretty much all my VW techs say they are a bunch of POS.

Garrett and Holset are the two geniuses behind this design. Garrett uses oil pressure to activate a mechanism that adjusts the angle on the turbine vanes, while Holset uses an actuator to adjust the volume of the turbine housing. Both are excellent in what they do... reduce turbo lag. From what I understand they even make these for bikes as well, and it is a huge difference. I wouldnt be suprised if we saw these in the next few years. This makes a large volume turbo very streetable. I have also heard of a turbo that has two compressor housings in one. Kinda works like a sequential design in one turbo. This design was to increase boost pressure while maintaing one turbo. Though this was a few years back and havent heard much anything else since.

Heres a link that has a vid on Holsets turbos work.... :thumb:

i think you guys are talking about vgt (Variable geometry turbine). Do a google search on it. I'm not sure is any smaller diesel engines use them. I don't think you would want a turbo from a big truck on a 4g63.

P.S. some places call it VTG (Variable turbine geometry)

agghh, you beat me to it

well anyways, I would love to see one that is rated for a good cfm for dsm's. maybe this should be someones next project? Man I wish I had a daily driver so I could try something like this on my dsm.

acctually if you go into the extreme tuning forum there is a very large and extensive thread on this topic and there are people....people that belong to this site putting similar turbo's on there car's

Volkswagen 1.8L Turbo Diesel, the new ones (Circa '97 and up) used the T15, the GT15 (non ball bearing), and the VNT15. Haven't been able to figure out a reason why they used three different turbo's.

More info.

And the 80's Chrysler 2.2L's turbo's had a VNT turbo of some sort, they're cheap on ebay.
