Would a FMIC be a good first upgrade?

Id honestly like to see a before and after of putting a large FMIC on a stock 2g on the dyno.. With no change to the boost or anything else. I would like to see how this affects the spool of the turbo and if it does make any increase in power.

i find it amazing we are even having this discussion...
forgive me I'm not Dave Buschur or Sean Glazer, but I can say I have more than an unhealthy knowledge of these curses we call DSMs.

you don't have to believe us. Find out for yourself and then think to yourself why you just spent a grand on something that isnt going to benefit you for a while.

have a good one

Hehehehe. Logic should dicate to you that the pressure drop is caused by the cooler intake charge, which would, in turn, yield more volumetric air per 1 unit of fuel = more HP and cooler intake temps. The pressure drop actually gives you the ability to gain it back so you get even more power for free.

I challenge you that putting on a FMIC without adjusting boost will probably yield the same HP as a car without a FMIC and no boost controller. In other words, a car with a FMIC at 10psi of boost should yield cooler temperatures than a standard SMIC or TMIC at 11-12psi. This is all assuming you have a very efficient core and piping. This also allows you to match your stock boost pressure by turning it back up to 11-12psi to gain that extra 10 or so HP.

My advise is if you want the FMIC so bad, buy it, store it away till you get some supporting mods there chief. Instead of "stretching before the exercise", your "jumping on the treadmill on top speed". You need to open the car up in better means. As meantioned before, the exhaust side takes a bigger priority when it comes to a turbo'd car. Sure your sucking in more/colder denser air, and yes thats good. But its useless if you have the stock pee-shooter exhaust. Thats not a benificial way of moving the air through and is far from an overall balanced and steady airflow.

Look at it like this. With the FMIC first upgrade on an otherwise stock car, its like taking a HUGE breath of air and blowing it as hard as you can through one of those tiny coffee straws as fast as you can. Now (for instance), a car with a ported 2G manifold, ported O2 housing, dp, and catback exhaust, on an otherwise stock car is like taking a regular breath and blowing it through an empty toilet paper/paper towel roll. Catch my drift?

My advise, follow the tuning guides. Their PROVEN to work and are the correct way. Some of them SLIGHTLY differ, but look on ALL of them and youll see exhaust mods near the top, and FMIC near the bottom ;)

this thread is great, all the positive and negative feedback, I think im going to start off with a o2 housing a downpipe instead.

I used to be able to kick my T25 up to over 20 psi with NO BOOST CONTROL (Around 1.5 bar).

All it takes really is an unported O2 housing and the removal of that little boost solinoid. Granted, my T25 died shortly afterwords, but it had a hell of a lot of "Instant On" low end.

The FMIC I was talking about was the stage 1 A.H.P. which is only $750.

Every T25 equipped car that I've seen has got SLOWER when they put on the FMIC. Doesn't make sense.... but I saw it with my own eyes.

On a 2G, the best order of upgrades, in my opinion: Boost gauge, 1G BOV + UPIC Pipe, K&N FIPK air filter, & manual boost controller. In that order. It would cost under $350, make your car sound cool, and give it a MASSIVE kick in the ass. Next I'd save up for a cat-back exhaust system.
Many people have run mid 12s on the stock 2G FMIC. It's really not all that awful. I'd upgrade the turbo *long* before I upgrade the FMIC. The cost is about the same.

Good luck with your car. Intake mods first! :thumb:

2G's dont come equipped with FMIC's, they come equipped with Sidemounts :p

Well let me go outside and take a look at my 2G... I'm looking through the front of the car.... yep, there it is, the intercooler. In the front. :p

ok...um...how to put this nicely...both the 1g and 2g come stock with a Side Mount Intercooler. When you purchased your car, it may have come with a FMIC already on it. If the guy said it was stock, he was lying to you my friend.

I agree with making the easy/cheap mods first, but I wouldn't take advice from someone that thinks his 2g comes stock with a FMIC. I'm not trying to bash you, you just sound like stupid genius.

Which is on the front of the car. Not the back. You can call it a Sidemount. (Most people do) You can call it a front mount, like I did. Technically I'm right. I may be flouting convention, but I'm right.

Jesus, people. Don't you have anything better to do with your lives?

Damn ricers.

Sorry if I phrased it poorly. I keep forgetting that a lot of DSM'ers now adays are stupid kids who don't know ####.

Oh well.

I got it, but i had hoped you were joking. You werent, and now you are being an ass.

And technically its a sidemount. Can i call my topmount IC a front mount because its near the front of the car?

No, you can't. It's a topmount. Don't be an idiot. :D

If a sidemount is a "front mount" because it's "near" the front of the car, then how do you distinguish between a FMIC and a SMIC?

And I say spend that $750 on a cat-back exhaust and test pipe (or hi-flow cat if you need to pass emissions.) Then get the downpipe, ported O2 housing, etc. Have fun :thumb:
