Wont go in 3rd grinds in 4th

hope you guys can help, its a 98 gs 5 spd. 1,2 5, and R are fine (save a few times I thought it was in reverse and it just grinded) but the shifter absolutely refuses to go into thrid gear and I have to baby it into 4th or it grinds. I checked the shifter cables at the trans. the levers move back and forth just like they are supposed to except in third. I removed the cable and tried pushing the arm into third myself and it wouldnt budge, but move the other arm and then it second arm will go back for 5th just fine. after messing with the cables and arms for a while I gave up but when I got back into the car the shifter starting going into third as long as I was sitting still, once I started driving however it was back to the same thing.

I saw some other posts addressing a similar issue - not going into reverse, but it didnt seem to answer the problem of no 3rd.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Hey fellow Okie, I would say it's your syncros going out, On my old 1g It was hard to get into reverse and 2nd, so I changed the trany fluid to the BG syncromesh and it helped a bunch, almost perfect afterwards. Try It!!

ok I'll try that. I went back outside and fiddled with the shifter some more. sitting in my drive way if I mess with it long enough I can get it to start slipping into third, once it does it will go in every time...(sitting in my driveway) I take it out on the street and it might go into third once with a little grinding then after that the shifter refuses to to even go in. It doesnt grind or anything, it just will not go.
