ok i have a 1991 eagle talon tsi fwd. only free mods done. but i had this problem before them so i doubt they are having this effect. but anyways the problem is as follows i was having a idle problem so i replaced the isc plugs wires fuel filter and checked base timing all are good. today i replaced the tps and adjusted it to .49 ohms (.48-.52 ohm tolerance)when the car is at idle i get a check engine light but it idles fine. as soon as i give it some throttle the engine light goes away and if i hold the throttle at 1500rpm or higher it pops and almost sounds like a misfire also it smokes alot but not at idle only when im giving it some throttle anywhere from 1500 on up i would say greyish smoke. if anyone has any ideas please let me know im pulling my hair out over this. if anyone is in the virginia beach area and willing to stop by and give me a hand it would be great. but if not all ideas welcome... :talon:

cool ill check on that also. thanks for all the help from everyone its really helpoing me progress along with getting this fixed. ive given everyone some rep for it thanks again and if you can think of anything else feel free to post

just a little update. im rechecking timing ,vaccum leaks this weekend. ill post to let everyone know how it turns out. also i found a ground loose by my ecu. no clue as to where it goes but imma get a ground wire diagram when im at work tomorrow and see if i can figure it out also i found a ground wire on the tranny that was melted pretty bad also when i got under the car oil leaks everywhere.....this is turning into way more then a fun project i had hoped for. its turning into work..... ROFL :talon: :thumb:

my car is doing something similar right now too.

it'll drive fine when i start it from cold, and i can run it staright ll day long if i want.

but as soon as it begins to cool for anywhere btwn half an hour to an hour and a half (partial cool down basically) and i start it back up. BOOM! misfire like crazy. and i only throw a CEL btwn 2000 and 2500 rpms.

any ideas?

Telling us what the CEL is would be a good place to start.

i don't have a logger, and also. . . i can't go get it checked because it only happens in gear, around those rpms.
A logger isn't required, just pull the codes the old fashion way using a multimeter, +12v piezo buzzer, or LED and resistor. Even if the CEL off the code may be stored.

Using a LED is a good way if you don't have a logger catching intermittant errors. You can hook it up and leave it connected. When everything is fine it will flash on and off (heartbeat), otherwise it will flash out any codes.

Right now we have nothing to go on other than you misfire on restart and you get an unknown CEL.

ok i think im missing the ground on my TB i see a hole on the tope for a bolt but no bolt and no ground to be found. the hole is right in front of the vaccum ports on the TB. also i think my timing is off. still gotta check it but havent been able to get my hands on a light. i rechecked for vac leaks still nothing i replaced a few lines that i thoungt looked like they needed it but no change. still smoken after warm up i think that has a good deal to do with a oil leak in the turbo system but ill check more into that after i fix my main concern with the missing at steady rpms.

havent posted on this thread in along time figured id get on and let who ever cared know my turbo is leaking and so is just about everything else so im getting turbo and engine rebuild kits pulling it all and rebuildn that bad boy. gonna get the block and head cleaned up etc etc not sure bout the tranny. just wanna say thanks to whom ever posted with info help alot to work out all the litte kinks but i think this problem is rooted deep within the engine hey but what do you expect a 350 dollar car to run like. havent been able to drive the car for almost a year now so another year shouldnt matter...

I wish I would have seen your post when you first wrote it.
Since I live in VA Beach also, I could have helped you out.
Sorry I missed it back then.
If you need any help in the future, drop me a line.
I can sometimes be helpful :D

just a quick update for anyone who would like to know how its going. found out my isc motor i got was bad, throttle position switch was out of adjustment along with the biss.(thanks again todd) also noticed that when the MAF is unplugged the car idles great just a little high and also the popping or misfire goes away so I'm guessing that points toward boost leaks and maybe a bad MAF any thoughts??

Your welcome. :thumb: It definitely runs a lot better and that huge surge is gone. I wish I had more time that day. I will try to figure out my days off and help out some more.
I'll need some help but we'll load up my air compressor and bring it over. I'm sure we'll find some good leaks since most of the piping and hoses are from 1991 :D That will knock out one other posibility/problem.
We'll get her on the road soon with a little patience.

Todd

gotta datalogger on the way so if we get time next weekend we can boost test and hook up the logger and see whats what. idle has been pretty good and stable ever since we messd with it but still gets that surge after warm up. but no where near what it was. need to get some gas also. dont happen to have a 5 gallon tank do you?

Don

got my logger today no time this week to use it but this weekend im going to hook it up and see what im reading. i did hook it up to test it and noticed one of my o2 sensors reading (front)2.50v and the other only (rear)0.3v. gonna have to look up specs on everything and see whats out of wack.

What's out of wack is the operator. :)
1G's only have 1 O2 sensor.

In MMCd that shows up as O2-R. O2-F is for the front bank sensor on V6's like the 6G72TT.

I can see that this thread is about 2.5 years dead, but I'm currently having a similar issue on my 91 NT. It doesn't sound like the issue was ever resolved. Are there any more updates from the original posters?
