Winter Weight Reduction Pt. 3

So I went at it a little today after work. I've been thinking about a custom dash for a couple months now and decided it was finally time to go at it.

As you can see I'm far from done but the main part is over. This will also give passengers (front and back) even more leg room than before when I had just the glovebox removed. If you were wondering this piece that I cut out -

Weighs 7lbs with brackets, screws, and the extremely lightweight vent ducting.

And since I cut this out it enabled me to get to the top bolts of the blower motor. Without this piece out I couldn't do it before so unless you want to start cutting you'll probably have to pull the whole dash out to get this thing out unless you have just the right size socket, in-between a regular one and a deep well.

The blower motor assembly weighs 6lbs.

Last but not least I also pulled out the bottom part of the drivers side dash shown here.

This piece with all brackets and screws weighs in at 7lbs.

Total lost tonight: 20lbs.
Gross weight lost: ~225lbs
Estimated Vehicle Weight: ~2,555lbs
Total left to reach goal: ~210lbs

I still have some big things I haven't taken out yet, I think I'll reach this goal without too much effort. Weight reduction is so fun!

If you can get to the top nuts to get the heater core loose you MIGHT be able to get it out with, what's left of the dash, still in place. There is a piece that connects the ducts in the dash to the core unit that snaps into the top of the heater core that covers one of the nuts on top. This might hold you up from getting everything loose in order to pull it out. Definitely not possible with the full dash still installed though...

safe to assume the car is no longer a Daily Driver. It does look like fun, but also a major pain in the butt. Good Luck and Have Fun.

Have you considered removing the rest of the vent ducts and the heater/ac controls?? That should help shave so weight considering the heater core and the blower motor have already been removed.

Yeah no longer my daily, but I won't think twice about driving it in 40*+ weather, and my dd doesn't have AC so I'll be in the talon most of the summer.

Yeah I'm hoping I can get at least the heater core out w/out removing the rest of the dash to get at it.

As for the controls I'd like to get rid of them but don't want the car to look like crap and I'm not sure what to do there, I'm sure I'll figure out something.

I FOR SURE want to keep my radio as well as 3 seats. (going to cut the back seat in half) The goal is to have a light car that I wouldn't be ashamed to take my grandma for a ride in. (kinda )

Looking good, gotta love weight reduction, it's like a drug, once you've started it's tough to stop. Having been down the road before, I'll just suggest again to try to keep everything somewhat clean looking. You'll appreciate it down the road. Also if you haven't already found it I listed a whole bunch of parts weights in the wiki. It may give you some more ideas for things to remove/do.

Lol, you're not kidding. I was very weary to try it at first and thought people who did it were kinda dumb, but now I'm hooked. And your wiki has helped me a lot actually, I didn't know that was you that wrote it though, thanks for that!

Also I definitely know what you mean about keeping it clean, I don't want to look like some of the honda and 240sx guys around here driving around a tin can with nothing but a single race seat, I'm only getting rid of one of the passenger seats (behind the driver) so that I can still tote my baby around if for some reason the dd's down for awhile.

I want to do something with the passenger side of the dash like this.

Except I want to keep my center console and for sure want to keep my radio since I drive a lot. I also don't want to do anything else to the drivers side dash than what I've already done. I think the hvac controls might be a little tricky.
