So the story starts at my rad fan froze up on me so I had to wait a week for a new aftermarket one to arrive from ebay. So got the fan and then installed it. Started the car up and gave it a little gas then as it was going back to idle I heard a ticking sound coming from the turbo. After talking to a few people and learning that in and out play means a rebuild :notgood: So I pulled the turbo and believe I found the source of the noise, I believe it is the intake blades hitting the turbine housing. I have taken pictures of the area that was hit. Do you think I can replace the journal bearings and then still run the turbo. It is a Precision 6266. I dont have a spare 1100 to buy another one or if anyone has parts to donate or cheap I would greatly appreciate that.

To me, with my untrained turbo eye, I will have to say no.

The contact looks way to excessive on both the wheel and cover.

It looks like the wheel chewed a groove about .010 or more deep into the cover.
 
Not good.

That much wheel damage will definitely require a rebalance, and that doesn't even factor the damage to the cover. You really need a new turbo if you want it to perform like another 6266 as there will be a sizable gap between the wheel and cover after the turbo's been rebuilt.

The correct parts kit for this turbo will cost you $75-$100 depending on the vendor.


On a related note, I see PTE's fixed their journal bearing turbo thrust issues.... :rolleyes:
 
Yes is going to make a huge difference. Because of that gap the compressor wheel is not going to be efficient to build pressure. You are going to need a rebuild kit need a compressor wheel and housing, then it needs to be rebalance. My opinion take the turbo to a professional shop that turbo rebuilds turbos and see what they say but I spend on mine $400 to rebuild, balance and a new turbine wheel and housing.
 
Ok well I am going to call up precision and see what they have to say. In case i need to replace it any suggestions for a turbo very similar to this one but obviously not a precision. I would like to just bolt it up the same way without changing oil lines or anything. And obviously the same performance beside breaking LOL
Anyone know the garrett equivalent for this turbo?

Will the gap make that big of a difference?
Yes.

A compressor wheel requires a certain tolerance to actually compress and move the air, otherwise it misses the wheel entirely. Take the piston rings out of your air compressor and see how quickly it builds air pressure. ;)

Damage like this could cost you as much as 10 lb/min of peak airflow depending how large the gap is.

Anyone know the garrett equivalent for this turbo?
Nothing, really. A 62mm Borg S300 would be close and use similar oil lines but only comes with a T4 turbine housing when new.
