Ok I just test drove a nice 95 GSX. There are a few questions that I have, The car has a 2.3 stroker and a lot of mods done to it and it has all the reciepts done at SBR.
So, the fist question. The fisrt stop sign I stopped at I pushed in the clutch and rolled up to it, the car just stalled, not hard, just kindof died. He said its because of the cams and there was also a nice cloud of white smoke after it died. Is it true that that would happen? (I did not notice any other smoke on accel or decel later.) Second question, the car has a T04B 57 Trim turbo (Borg Warner) but the thing looks tiny (same size as 16g or so) I wasnt sure if was the real thing or not. But I am a turbo newbie. Lastly it sounded like it had sompressor surge or what i think compressor surge sounds like. It just doesnt sound the same as my friends and they both have the greddy type s.
Thanks in advance. :thumb:

The car sounds like a piece of crap, white smoke=bad headgasket. I'd stay away from buying any car that has any kind of smoke coming out of the exhaust. And a 57 trim is a fairly big turbo, if it looks like a 16g chances are it isn't a 57 trim. If you had pics that would help.

And cams will cause a car to stall sometimes if the car isn't tuned right.

I'm not sure what the white smoke was because it only happened that one time. Other than that it ran fine. I hope I uploaded the pic. (It's the only picture I have.)

O ya that looks like a 57 trim, that is much bigger than a 16g Lol.
Motor bay doesn't look too shabby, the white smoke would worry me though. I'd have a compression and leakdown test done before you make any decisions, also post all the mods on the car.

Also, note the lack of any timing belt cover. Not safe. Possibly built properly by SBR, but the owner ran the pi$$ out of it.

There is nothing wrong with not running a timing cover, I don't have one and a lot of people aren't running them. Its not running a lower timing cover that would be a problem.

Car doesn't look too bad, I wouldn't pay nearly what he is asking though.

The thing is, it doesn't look like the lower cover is on it. That is what I was talking about.

run away and don't look back.

why would you only use a SAFC to tune. specially when you have a supposedly built block, and supporting mods to go fast?

confusing.

still run away.

the decisions up to you. If you like it go for it. I'd pay that for it. It might die because of a vacuum leak and might smoke because of a boost leak or running rich. still i dont see how it only has 300 hp. Make him show you the paperwork for the build

hes been trying to sell this car for a very long time, he had it posted when i started school at UTI in August 09 and he still didnt sell it and its Aug 10'. Theres rather something wrong with it or hes asking way to much.

Price seems okay for a gsx but definatly do a leakdown/compression test. The turbo is not a borg worner, it just has the internals. I would also check for shaft play in the turbo and WTH is up with 300whp.... you can make that with a s16g.

Leak down and/or compression test before moving any farther into buying the car. If he doesn't have a compression tester, buy one for $25 and have him do one right in front of you. Not to get into hating on slowboy racing, but there have been times where there work hasn't been A+. Although, seeing as someone above stated he has been trying to sell it for a while, may be the operators fault for the issues. Cams can cause it to stall out, and if it was done on an safc, doubt the tune is anywhere near good. Be weary, buying a car like that could turn into a money pit if it already has problems.

that car is a money pit.. and ask for the dyno sheet to prove the numbers.

i still say run away. you can find a better one than that. just search harder, and not local.

It doesnt seem to be overpriced for all the mods and things done. that is if it was done correctly.

mostly stock 95 GSXs with 100+k miles I've seen going for $2.5-3k

yes nothing wrong without timing cover, and no that is clearly no where close to looking like a 16g

and why are you insisting in getting a heavily modded DSM as your first turbo DSM?????

babysteps, or else you will be like the MANY who will fall quick cause you thought it was a walk in the park.

You should leave modded DSMs to more experience owners who can see the problems imo.

done correctly is key.

buying a car with mods is not a bad thing. its actually a way to save you a lot of money. because the previous owner put the money into the car, so sunk cost is always a perk.

but with sunk cost, comes the cost of downtime, due to improper installation. sunk cost also comes with a larger price tag in the end, if the sunk cost was done incorrectly. which the majority of people that has these cars, really don't know that much about them.

sure you can put larger injectors and a bigger turbo and a front mount on it, but what happens when you don't actually install these things correctly, or fail to install the proper supporting mods.

it's a fine line, with a modded car.

DSM's i don't recommend to buy that modded, because our horrible history and horror stories that are associated with DSM's. Most of those stories comes from improper/incorrect installation, and idiots trying to go fast.
