Recently bought a full 3'inch exhaust and the person before me had the o2 bung welded in like 5-6 inches past the flex pipe section. I was wondering if that is to far to get a real nice accurate reading for the wideband. I bought the innovate wideband, was just wondering if i should get a new bung welded on the beginning of the downpipe or before the flex pipe at least.
 
Or there is the short and sweet answer that you want your O2 to be as close to the collector as possible without impeading air flow. You can run 4 wide bands if you wanted, one for each cylinder, but the closer to the main collection point, the more accurate a reading you will get. as all 4 cylinders will combine there and thus will have the best reading of overall A/F ratio across all 4 cylinders. Simply putting it as close to your turbo (unless your running a remote mount) is likely to be your best bet. Down pipe is primary best point. Anything before the cat should give you a decent reading tho.
 
Wideband manufacturers recommend about 36" away from the turbo BUT before the flex section. I originally had mine on the downpipe, just before the flex section, but now it is in the stock location, o2 sensor housing, (simulating narrowband for the ECU) and it works great. Whatever you decide, make sure it is before the flex.
 
Like Nate, I am running mine in the front o2 sensor location using narrow band simulation.
 
alright thanks everyone for the help, i really thought it would be better before the flex pipe. didnt know if there was a different reason for the person who had the exhaust before me to have welded it where he did.

Now one more question on the same subject, i viewed the first link posted and read down some of the comments and came across another person saying they used the same stock spot. Someone than said that using it there causes the wideband sensor to fail faster? Have either of you noticed something along those lines, and do you need to have a tuning device, like DSMlink. Which i do plan on picking up in about a little more than a month.

Dave and I have talked a bit off line about this before, but I wanted to post my own data here to get the ball rolling. I run my own wideband sensor in the stock front O2 location and I run HOT and HARD at the road course as well as daily driving for days on end. But, I don't put 40,000 miles a year on my car like I used to either... I'm putting maybe 5,000 a year on the DSM. But much of that is 30 minute all out sessions, wide open throttle nearly the whole time pushing 25-30psi.

With that said, I have *so far* not had a wideband sensor fail in the front O2 location. So, like Dave, I'm really curious to know if anyone actually has and if they were able to attribute the failure to installation location. For example, if you had 3 WB O2s fail in the front O2 location over some period of time and then moved it further downstream or installed a heatsink of some sort and never had one fail again... That type of data would be very interesting to hear.

Having run it in both the stock front location, 6 inches further back (custom bung location), and the rear 02 sensor location, the biggest fight you'll have moving it further back will not accuracy so much, but more of exhaust leaks. If you want to use a location further back on the exhaust, you need to make sure the exhaust is sealed nice and tight before hand - otherwise your wideband will show you are running a bit leaner than you truly are, and compensating for such could cause you to ran a tad-bit too rich depending on how big of a leak is present.

Having ran it in several locations, the only thing that I noticed was a minuscule amount of time delay between the readings. The closer to the exhaust manifold you are, the quicker you get your readings. Further back, the longer - but it's such a small difference that it didn't harm my AFRs in the least - especially considering that dyno tunes are known to clip a sensor onto the exit of the exhaust system at the rear of the car and tune off of that. Again - it's not location, it's leaks which will be your issue.

The one thing people tend to practice with moving the Wideband sensor to the stock front 02 location is using a heatsink to help shield the sensor from radiating heat from the exhaust. I personally did not use one and noticed no issues at all with mine at the time. Others swear by it - so it's all personal choice on how cautious you want to be.
 
Sorry to revive this thread. I'm in a situation where I am gonna have to install my wideband o2 tomorrow and I do not have the resources to get a copper heat sink in that time. My question is, have there been people who have used the wideband o2 in the stock location without the heat sink and have not had a problem with their o2 sensors dying quickly? Thank you
 
I promise you are going to hear they will last forever there and don't worry about it and you'll also hear it will die asap. It's one of those things that's hit and miss. Worked fine for me. Your best bet is to not run it there if you are truly worried about killing it.

It's not so much that I'm so worried about killing it as I can Just purchase another one, it's more so if whether I should get the heat sink in or not. I'm gonna run it there regardless. I guess what I really wanna know is whether I should still purchase a copper sheet and use it as a heat sink later or if I can Just leave the o2 installed. I've never removed my o2 I guess I'm just worried about it being a PITA to remove because of the heat causing it to seize.
