Well AT owner's, here's what not to do in your AT and why.

Don't shift from 1-2-D unless you got a good reason
Don't use OD unless rpms are over 3k in D (saves end clutch)
Don't downshift from D to 2nd unless under prob 2k in D (not OD)
Don't downshift from OD to D unless under 2k or at a light.
Don't WOT consecutively without a aftermarket tranny cooler
Don't Neutral drop, PERIOD, even accidently. If you shift into N, pull over, then shift to D, it's not neural that kills, it's going back into drive.

So take care of those AT's, and upgrade them just as you do your engine. you can visit Plymouth Laser for lots of AT faqs and parts. :thumb:

My point is, just because it's an automatic does not mean it does the shifting for you.

You know I was referring to the standard automatics. Not the sportshifts, triptronics and all that. Your just trying to be a smartass. As for me I am a smartass. ;)

So what is the difference between the shiftronics and the standards? If you read the owner's manual for the standards it tells you to manually shift it according to traffic conditions and speeds.

Well I drove 2 automatic cars for 5 years and I never had the need to shift them myself. Traffic conditions or not. They have low gears for conditions like snow.

The whole point of a fully automatic tranny is so you dont have to shift the gears yourself. Why would they even make them if it wasnt? MT get better mileage and performance in general. Plus they are cheaper to repair.

Ive driven a few shiftronic trannys when I worked for mercedes benz. They did not impress me really. I would still prefer a MT with a clutch. But I would rather drive a shiftronic over a standard auto also.

Again, this is not an automatic vs manual thread. This is a thread about shifting automatics.

Indeed, lets get back on topic.

I don't really know much about automatics. I know people that have blown an auto tranny because they like to "shift" with it. Going from 1-2-D. I think they think they are getting faster shifts or something. That does nothing but hurt your tranny right?

it doesnt hurt your tranny unless you shift too late or way too early like shifting to third going 15

It's not possible to force an automatic to shift into 3rd at 15mph. if you can, it's time for a new transmission, because it's NOT normal for our cars.

Shifting from 1-2-D does NOT harm your car so long as you're doing it within the rev limits. For example, if you put your car in drive, hit the gas and let it goto red line through each gear and it shifts at 6500rpm, then shifting it "manually" with 1-2-D through each gear at 6500rpm gives the exact same effect. No difference, to my knowledge atleast. Our transmissions are electronically controlled, so 1-2-D means "stay in 1st gear," "start in 1st, stay in 2nd," and "start in first, go through second, finish off in third then overdrive."

If you shift your car at 7,500rpm in an auto without the appropriate mods, then you are, indeed, a moron.

As to how to shift your AT properly; why not just let it do what it does?

As for the debate on which is better; I’m kind of torn on the whole AT vs. MT thing. AT can boost better off the line and won’t waste boost while shifting like a MT, yet…. It’s just wrong! It can’t work like that. Liquid splashing around inside a torque converter shouldn’t propel such a heavy object! I mean… are there really laws of physics that govern how an AT works? I think not.

Far as I’m concerned, automatic transmissions are technology brought to us by space aliens to make us think that life doesn’t have to be as difficult as it really is (kind of like Mac computers).

Besides, I can fix and rebuild a MT because I know how it works. I think that’s the real reason why I stay with MTs.

Satori, regarding your alien-technology comment, lay off the crackpipe bro. if you were referring to integrated circuits coming out of nowhere, then maybe ... but AT's have been around forever.

Sorry to see that Jon. I've already been through 1 mitsu tranny due to doing crap like that. Now I have a fully built level ten tranny with shifttronic so I now have full control over the gears.

Hey how much did that cost thiunking bout getting one. cause i know my tranny gonna die soon like in 5-6 months
