Hi, I just got done helping my friend fix stuff on his newly purchased mitsubishi eclipse gst 1996. We were just doing tires/wheels, cold air, uip, greddy BOV, and some other minor cosmetic stuff. When we declared the "job well done" weekend over, we decided to take it for a test drive to see if everything works. the car has 130,000 miles on the clock but still boosts strong and set at 12 psi on a small 16g. we finally found a good stretch of open road and he decided to go WOT. at 1st gear, it made like a stumbling feeling past 4000 rpms. Its never done this before so it was ###### just his plugs since we didnt do tune up yet. He shifts to 2nd then around 4000rpms, the car felt like something just grenaded inside the engine bay, smoke poured inside the car. We tried to start it back up but it wouldnt budge, after careful inspection and picking up chunks of the block, we saw that the front balance shaft somehow "exploded" and took the whole front part with it. I thought at first that it was the mains because we saw parts on what looked like main bearings. It was the front balance shaft bearings! So yeah, it is a good idea to remove your balance shafts, specially on a high mileage car.
