:talon: I got a quote today from someone in regards to rebuilding my motor. just back to stock. and they told me 6,000.00 WHY!?!??!! Thats outrageous. Or am I losing my mind? Somone with some insight please help. this was a shop.

pulling the motor is the easy part, but not to offend anyone but half the reason dsms be getting bad raps for being unreliable is because theres so many back yard dsm guys rebuilding their own engines taking short cuts. Yea you could technically assemble the engine yourself and do all your own work, but make sure you take a part to a machine shop to get tested to see if its even in spec of tolerance if you cant do that on your own. Also when you take off parts make sure you put it back exactly the same way, because Ive seen some poor dsm builds leading to some horrible results.
On my 6bolt rebuild swap I pulled the motor myself and had a mechanic/ buddy I know built/ cryotreat/ and do the works on the whole engine and he helped me install and I payed 2k total for getting the engine/ putting mostly all new parts in it/ and labor cost. So yea 6k to me sounds ridiculous.

I am currently having a rebuilt stock engine put into my 98 2g AWD Talon... I got about 6 quotes, all including the motor and the istallation. Low bid was around $3,800 to a high of $5,200... The other thing you have to consider is the condition of the parts that get moved over onto the "new" engine... in my case the manifold was cracked by the dealer I foolishly took it to to replace the timing belt, which they evidently did a less than stellar job on as my motor is now dead. The water pump needs replacing and my turbo has some play in the shaft, so you could indeed run into extra costs. I'm now up to $5,100.00 for the engine replacement. I most certainly agree that the auto repair industry is right next to high seas piracy, and you do need to keep a high degree of situational awareness in order to protect yourself... Believe me I feel your pain.
