I seached a couple of DSM forums without finding the answer and now I must ask; why is there no AWD Spyder? I also read that some people have converted FWD DSM's to AWD, but that it's a difficult and expensive project. Is there any reason that the Spyder would be even more difficult to convert? Has anybody done it? -- Matt

They don't need any other car that good. But if you still think Mitsu is lazy or just doesn't care, you'd still be wrong. North America just doesn't get all the sweet stuff. Check out Mitsu's RalliArt line up for anywhere else. They're just now bringing it to the states. In fact, they're making a new eclipse with a big turbo wing, a 4G63 and AWD.

There was a AWD 1G on cardomain, it was made into a drop top. But it had a very wel built roll cage.

Think about this, rember that white 2G with the targa top. Did anyone notice how much bracing and cage was made and added on over time.

I highly doubt a dinky 6point mild steel will be enough for this, break out the chromaly and the welder because it needs to be stronge.

A friend of mine builds chasis for dirt track cars and he uses mild steel unless the owner wants chromoly. The reason being is that chromoly will start to fatigue and weaken after a short period of time (usually 1 or 2 seaons), and the mild steel holds up longer. He built the cage for my race car and is also building a cage for my street car. I am going with mild steel because I do not want to have to replace it in a few years with another cage. Just an FYI if you use a chromoly cage and plan on racing, you will need to document it's age.

Well the car is going to need more than a 6point cage, and if its a street car it should have to be very safe also in case somthign should happen.

On a street car wouldnt it see less stress and abuse, if you looked at the Targa white 2G it has ALOT of strengthing added to it. He keeps adding more and more over time, I just wanted to point that. It sounds easyer than what is really involved, my freind is under going a FWD=AWD swap.

I dont like droptops and dont feel they are safe in the first place, I have a fear of flipping one.

I agree with you on bracing and I was not trying to dispute what you were saying. I was just wanting to point out that if you use chromoly you will need to change it in a few years so going with mild steel would be a better option for the street.

Oh and street cars routinely see more stress to their chasis than race cars see. Most race tracks are smooth while streets are rough. It sounds strange but a daily driven car will wear suspension and body parts out more frequently than a track only car will.

None taken, I wasnt either. I agree with everything you have said also, AWD drop top would be kinda cool to have. As long as there is a cage, I really dont like then and dont feel safe.

I have an AWD spyder and to tell you the truth, safty is not at the top of my list with my spyder. If it was, I would not have a DSM. They are not the safest car on the roads at all. But I dont drive my spyder daily. And on these convertables, they already stiffin up the frame a bit.
