I am thinking of buying a gsx but I need some informaton probably you guys can help.I used to own an rsx type s which I had to trade in for a minivan since my wife gave birth to twins. But for now I can afford to get a gsx with some extra money left for some mods. I would like to get into an awd or a rwd vehicle and one of my choices is a gsx. But lately while reading this forum I see a lot of gsx owners running 14 or high 13 in the 1/4 mile with a number of bolt ons. I need you guys to give me some info on this vehicle and if it's worth getting.

Either the car isn't running right, or someone can't drive. DSM's are very easy to get into the 13's. These cars take very well to modifications.

what are your goals? daily driver with balls, or full out track bi***? in stock form both generations of cars are capible of straight 15 second passes with a good driver.

add a few bolt ons(catback, intake, bov, boost controller) and you can easily see mid to low 14's, which is most likely what the people you see running those times have. if theyre a 2nd gen theyre being held back by their stock garrett T25 turbo, its ability to make useful boost tops out at 15psi and falls on its face at around 5.5k-6k rpm. however the 1g's have a better stock turbo(except for automatics) that is more able to put out higher boost and airflow numbers, so replacing that with a bigger one is not a requirement.

on a 2g the best bang for buck turbos are mitsubishi style turbos, like the 14b, 16g, all the way up to the 20g. these can flow lots of air and can efficiently put out 20-30psi. for a 2g they require either a install kit(available for 200 and less through our vendors) or some mcguyver like skills to make some ghetto parts. on a 1g however the stock 14b turbo people have done 12's, but the 14b reaches its limit at around 20psi, and does not flow as much air as its bigger counterparts. the mitsu style turbos are DIRECT bolt on, no need for any such install kits.

as with more boost you need to compensate by adding more fuel. injectors, fuel pumps and something to tune with is a must. you cant jsut bolt on bigger injectors and bigger pump and call it a day. owning a dsm is all about the tuning.

checkout the tuning guide up top for more info. also there are alot more people who know more than me that can help you with anything you need.

oh and its definately worth it. when you can buy a car for 7-10 grand and put 2 grand into mods and run low 13's to even high 12's theres not many things that are under the 30k price range that can touch you.

I think weight is the problem with this cars. I wonder what this cars would do if they were about 300 lbs lighter and the engine would still make power past 6000 rpms. It would be a hell of a buy. awd, turbo, around 27or 2800 lbs high revin'. no vehicle out there would touch it. But back to reality, I'll be looking around and see what else comes up. But so far the gsx looks to be it.

The cars are even heavier than you think probably. Judging by your comment of taking out 300 pounds to get it into the 27-2800# area. The awd cars on average are around 3200# =/- depending on options.

The biggest reason you see alot of cars with some mods running 14s is because the cars are cheap and that makes them accessable to people that don't really know what they are doing and in alot of cases don't seem to really even care. Sad but true.

my time is a FWD with evo3 turbo 15PSI and fuelpump, soso tires slipping clutch, AND it was my first time Dragracing, and ever since i haven't been to the racetrack, (i like roadcourse a lot more :D )... thats it! so you will easyly get into 13th with the right driver a few bold ons and AWD !

BTW i saw some 14th-15th numbers here from awd owners... maybe you guys make your cars run good before running it at the track :/

and one more :D will you get a 1G or 2G?
Here is a good techarticle on 1G's and 12th :D

Exhaust, intake, boost controler and other "free" modifications, you should be able to breach 13s with either a 1g or a 2g without a problem. 2g will require a bit more to hit those low 13/high 12s than a 1g though. (bov and turbo)

Well, you can do some weight shaving and do the things required to make it rev high but regardless, there just aren't many choices out there that can compare with the potential these cars have (except maybe a 93-95 f-body or mustang) at this price point. Unfortunately, we have a bunch of broke teenagers buying them up because they're cheap and they usually don't do things the right way (first mod they'll put on is a loud BOV). That's why you'll see more and more people not achieving better times with them.

The 4g63 has been around for 15 years now and it is a proven power plant. Since it's been on the market soo long there are a lot of parts and a lot of different vendors to buy them from. You talk about 15's as if they are bad, many other 4 banger counter parts are running 15s with a bunch of bolt ons. Loosing weight is possible so long as you are willing to loose some of the creature comforts. There are well established communities (such as this one :thumb: ) with a great deal of people with real knowledge and experiance. Many of the other 4 bangers require you to swap the motor in order to see any real responsiveness to modification. Just about any mod you do on a GSX/GS-T will give you noticable gains.
